For those how don't read dutch:In the computer 1500 legs were created using rods of random length. The computer evaluated which legs approximated the ideal walking curve. Of these 1500 the best 100 were selected. They gained the privilege of reproduction. Their rods were copied and combined into 1500 new legs. These 1500 legs have some liking to their parents and were tested using the ideal curve. This processes went on for many generations and the computer was working for weeks and months (day and night).

In the end 13 numbers evolved, indicating the ideal lengths for the rods. The final result was the leg of the Animares Currens Vulgaris. It was the first walking beach-animal. But still, from time to time the Vulgaris resisted walking. A new computer-evolution produced the legs of the subsequent generations. These are the magig figures:

Wow, yeah coming up with the idea, writing a program to model your solution, then adapting an evolution algorithm to optimize that solution is not like real at work.

The computer was secretly controlling everything and the human definitely did not use their creative to imagine the initial design or to the select the best tools available to further refine his idea.

There is no reason at all to feel pride for creating computers and programs capable of replicating years of trial and error. The entire field of computer science isn't one of the greatest examples the application of human ingenuity and rational thought, not at all.

Jansen created this sculpture as part of a study on evolution so getting it right on the first try would be completely useless for his purposes, but what if instead of running an algorithm he tested out design ideas by building scale models and analyzing data from testing those models. What if when doing the math he used a calculator instead of pencil and paper, does that ruin the project too?

Me again. I am about 60% done with the mechanics and before I started unfolding and test building thought I should clarify something. Are you guys looking for an exact replica of Jansen's Animaris Rhinozeros, or do just want something that moves the same way? As of now I have left off the center pod and the ridge along the top but I could add them if people really wanted them. Just be aware, if I add them their sizing may or may not be correct. I was planning on extrapolating their dimensions from this image via the known length of the leg components. But if no wants them I wasn't going to bother with it.

I was originally planing on doing something with cylindrical joints and common axles to form some type of linkage system but, as you can see, this made the model a tad wide.

I'm scraping that idea in favor of making each leg section as a single rectangular tube then connecting them with squares of thinner paper or some masking tape.

For me, the triangular leg parts are going to be closed boxes (like in the original), triangular tubes and paper strip hinges for the rest. I am more concerned about how the crankshaft needs to be build to connect the legs together. The way you have it set up in your current model, the green drive wheels would be blocked after half a turn. Also remember to offset each pair of legs by 120 degrees, or else there wouldn't be a fluid motion. I have no idea how to realize this with paper parts, so I am going to have to use a piece of wire as the crankshaft.

Honestly I think it is closer to a quarter of a turn before it would lock up. But mostly because the entire drive gear sub assembly is a place holder I was using while I mapped out the legs. Once I saw what a nightmare those were going to become I went back to the drawing board. I was thinking of doing either a wire crankshaft like you mention or using toothed drive wheels connected by a series of gears along the underside (my last project was a paper clock). But then I watched this video of the the rhino moving with out its skin on and saw that the appears to only be only using one wheel in the center. Now I am seeing if I can replicate that.

I think you might have better luck if you try a modification on the struted leg arrangement of the "kinetic horse" thats on youtube. Sort of, one or one and a half horse bodies on either side of the pilots hub. It looks to me that the legs "body hub" should be inter-connectable at the top and bottom of the main lozenge. Just a thought.

Thank you for your input. As you can see my early design is already pretty similar to the kinetic horse leg. I thought of creating two leg modules, one right- and one left-handed version. Those modules would interconnect at the pivot point where the leg is attached to the main body and the central axis of the crankshaft. Those two points would have to be reinforced anyway, so I can use both main body and two leg modules to add to stability. If I can make the pivot point big enough, I might even get away with not stabilizing at the top and bottom of a leg module.
Before I continue though I have to find out what is supposed to be the reference plane for the ground. Until now I have assumed that the ground is parallel to line A, but there seems to be a small angle between the ground and that line. But that might also be my sloppy test build. Can someone confirm the magic numbers from >>244765?

Status update for those interested, I have figured out a workable solution to the drive wheel. ( Image not of final version but shows general idea) but its going to require reworking the way I had the legs working and the way the outer frame would connect to the moving elements.

Please don't get me wrong, I would love to do this with Pepakura. Software that is simple is not necessarily bad. An experienced user can do more with a simple program than a newb with more sophisticated software. In this case, Pepakura would have saved me a lot of time spent with manually unfolding, and now there are still all the tabs to add!

Sorry to dissapoint you, but I don't think this model will scale this well, even when provided as vectors. There are many design elements like the paper hinges which wouldn't work properly above cat sized. On the other hand, if you are going to use more sturdy cardboard or even thin plywood you could do without many of the reinforcing elements that are necessary for a paper model. I am going to finish this model first, after that and if you are really dedicated do this, I can help you with the plans.

STATUS UPDATE
In the picture you can see the three development stages the leg already went through and the first stage of a hub design. (Can someone spot the blaringly obvious error? Sometimes I am amazed at my own stupidity.) There also happens to be cake.
The leg builds fine and now has the structural integrity the second iteration was lacking, but the range of movement still needs to be improved. Right now there is too much resistance when moving across the 100° position, which kills the drive wheel hinges after a few revolutions. After I have fixed that, the hub is next on the list.

If you look at the middle leg in the pic, you can see that the rightmost part has only half the width of the rest of the leg. This is where the legs connect to the drive wheel and the only part where the two opposite legs overlap. Incidentally this is also the location where the second iteration of the leg bent out of shape after half a revolution. In the third iteration that part is now heavily overengineered and the only component that will survive when everything else (like the drive wheel hinges) breaks down. When I have fixed that range of movement problem I might me able to remove some of the reinforcements here again and make it easier to build.
TL;DR: the leg is ambidextrous and you just need to build twelve of them and six hubs for a working model.

However, I am still working on my own design. It will be more sturdy but also more difficult to build. Currently working on the third iteration of the suspension. Already stable enough but still to difficult to built. I have finally accquired a drive unit and now I can design the center pod around it. Luckily it came with a gear belts included, but still needs some additional gears.

Related protip: pencil makes for an excellent dry grease. Just crosshatch the hinges 2-3 times until the paper doesn't accept anymore graphite. Less wear and friction.

i finished the earlier posted template and it turned out pretty good.

i made it with regular paper and tape but that wasnt strong enough to hold a motor powerful enough to make it actually walk. it would work as long as it wasnt on the ground, once it hit the ground it just stopped because of lack of power.

im making a new version out of cardstock and glue. im going to mount the motor in the center and use a controller directly wired to it to make it move backwards and forwards... the battery is going to be inside the controller to reduce weight

Setting up genetic algorithms that will result in good data from generation to generation is harder then you think.
