So I had all these ideas that would make for a nifty Mario game, but I figured it'd be far more productive to turn them towards a tabletop game. So, Marioland Tabletop, I guess.

The tweest is, you play as minions of Bowser; Koopas, Goombas, Boos, Bob-ombs, what have you.
>> Anonymous 12/16/08(Tue)01:02 No.3181800
I think incorporating Timed Hits is a must.

Koopas = armored foot soldiers, though vunerable to air attacks.

Boos = rogues/assassins, must fight an opponent when their back is turned.

Bob-ombs = suiciders

So, some method of outcome-determination that's affected by a player's own coordination?

Attacks are resolved by a game of marbles, jacks, or beer pong

FUND IT

Ever since the new edition, Thwomps are where it's at. Sure they're slow as shit, but they are damn near indestructible. Close range only, but there's few, if any thing that can even damage you from long range, so who cares!

Honorable mention goes out to Piranha Plants, High Str, stealthy as all hell, broken fireball attack (it can go through walls for gods sake) but are far too vulnerable to long range anything

I don't see how people can say this game is broken. Its just more geared to damage output than damage input - when EVERYONE has an attack that can kill in one hit, it isn't really all that broken. It's like modern day in a gunfight, really.

That said, Dry Bones often ends up winning eventually as a result, but you always end up against SOMEONE with fire eventually...

Well, not just the berserk risk. Chain chomps attack by themselves a lot more than bullies do, which leads to getting themselves killed. The point is to have a defender that stays on defense, and the Bully is perfect for that. They push people around and soak damage - exactly what a spell-slinging magikoopa needs.
>> Anonymous 12/16/08(Tue)02:11 No.3182185
I hate how Goombas have a rep for being the weakest race. Granted, they have shitty starting HP, but if you pick and choose your way through battles at low levels, they become total monsters (no pun intended) at later levels. Hypergoomba FTW, they're Marioland's Orks. Fucking awesome. And Gloombas? An extra attack just because they're assholes? Yes please.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

We were crawling through a pipe labyrinth because we heard a rumor from this team of Chargin' Chucks we met on the Donut Plains. Supposed to be a bunch of stars locked in a vault deep, deep inside.

We're going through, finding every trap (One thing the Boo is good for, I guess. Not counting the time he snuck up on Wario and got a crit, that was fucking AMAZING), dealing with most everything with no problem (I was playing a Koopa Striker with a huge Dex score, it was ridiculous), I figured we'd be in and out and rich like kings. Until the goddamn Shy Ranger starts rifling through this chest, finds a big silver key, and pockets it without telling us.

4, fucking 4, Phantos. We can hear them screaming for us, all around us, and we have no idea where they're coming from because there's eight or nine pipes leading to this room. The Magikoopa gets taken out by one surprise attack, his Chain Chomp berserks and barely misses me, the Lakitu tries to mount up and *critical fails*, and what does the Shy Ranger do? He uses a Slow Flower and fucking runs back to the entrance.

I took two down before I died. Granted, I had a little help from the Chomp. But man, was I pissed.

It was our first game. We're doing a lot better this time around; I rolled a Magitoad (exiled from the Mushroom kingdom for trying to subvert the crown, and proved himself to the Koopas, basically. Helps that they took my family star as payment.) The huge bonus to charisma Toads have over Koopas, plus the Trustworthy perk makes diplomacy a joke. I intimidated a Hammer Bro so badly, he swore himself into my service. That, combined with some homebrew Toady spells, makes for all the tank we need.

Mario is this game's equivalent to THE MOTHERFUCKING TERRASQUE! DM's only throw them at you if they want to end the campaign or hates your characters outright.

This one time, my party consisted of a Magikoopa with the Dry Bones template, A Koopa Paratroopa promoted from Shellshocker, A Snifit promoted from a Shy Guy Runner, and a Rex that had managed to enslave a Red Yoshi for a mount.
Our GM was literally livid at how much synergy we had. Basically every encounter came down to me turning blocks into Koopa Drones, the Snifit back-attacking the Drones out of their shells with his rock shots, the Shocktroopa (as we called it) Fly-by attacking the shells, rocketing them at the target, Meanwhile the Rex runs on the other side of the guy and has his Yoshi eats the shells that miss the target and Fireballs the hell out of em.
So, what's he do? Send that fatass italian at us, since apparently Bowser decided to randomly kidnap Peach for like the THIRD TIME that campaign. Party Wipe. Total Party Wipe. We even scattered in 4 different directions and he managed to Hop and Mega-Flame the lot of us.

Damn man, I'm sorry. I WISH my PCs understood teamwork like you guys, that's beautiful.

You know, all the DM had to do to make things interesting was find ways to remove parts of the chain. Like, an encounter with no Blocks to work with, or make rocks for the Snifit REEEEAL scarce for a while.

Alternatively, make an opponent that can hack your combo. If the other guy has a snifit, and it takes its turn between your snifit and your magikoopa, it can hijack the shell projectiles, making for an awesome gaming moment right there.

Theres no rule saying you cant use them they just were so killer that the designers try not to talk about them anymore.Heck theres alot of stuff you dont see from the old editions that make for wicked games

My longest running epic level campaign lead to my team ending up commanders of Bowrers dark world defense force.I used another set of rules they barely talk about anymore taking the Doomship rules and making Tanks and even my own personal Navy with them.We loaded with enough cannons and bullet bills to level half a world.

The Epic final confrontation comes up and my Navy turns aside Mario 3 FRIGGAN TIMES.It was so epic.Problem is i didnt think things through enough and he comes back with a Hammer Bros. Suit [Just proving they are the best] and then SWIMS UNDER MY FUCKING BOATS.I cursed the day i forgot to get even one Boss Bass too keep him from doing that and without the rest of the guys for support i got torn apart by tons of hammers and jumps. Its my own fault i guess but man it was an epic game

You're telling me. We loved our Strike Force party... We had the Yoshi carry full compliment of rocks for the Snifit anyway.
And trust me, the DM tried like all hell to throw a wrench into things. Though, since I could regenerate myself combined with crazy magic I couldn't be touched, Shocktroopa and the Snifit could hit and run like a motherfucker, And anything we couldn't kill the Rex's Yoshi could just tongue-tie it while he would Chomp it til it couldn't resist the Yoshi anymore and get swallowed.
Really though, it seemed like the DM was completely foreign to the concept of actual teamwork. I blame too many years of World of Darkness games where everyone's an asshole out for themself.

I had a friend that actually ran a table-top mario game. It was what happened if mario picked the bad ending in Paper Mario Thousand Year Door.

Big Eyes Small Mouth worked wonders for the Mario Universe.

A Toad with infite storage under his mushroomtop.
A Yoshi random effects table everytime it ate something.
Rolling to attack with blue shells.
Drive checks for kart racing.
....Wario farting attacks (which another party member was dumb enough to be smoking at the time and ignited the damn things, everytime!).

Try looking at BESM for this

You want to talk about unbalanced? Pic fucking related. Not only are they awesome to start, with both healing and a minor offensive spell, their blasts get hella strong, and their best spell, Magikopy, is like a cracked out Simulacrum. If your MAG is high enough, you get 4 FUCKING COPIES. Holy dogfuck.

Next campaign I plan on rolling one of these guys, hiring on a Super Koopa for my defender (Probably a Red Koopa for first level), and maybe stealing a Lakitu cloud just to be a total twink.

That's the problem with Hammerbro; you need high strength, so you can do appreciable damage, high dex to make sure you hit consistently, a lot of health and defense because you're likely going to be the first one the enemies target. Not to mention their total lack of skills (Though that's not them, it's the whole Koopa thing).

So, has anyone gone up against Luigi yet? I've noticed DM's don't like to use him that much.

Our party went up against him last week. He's not as butt-rape as Mario is, but god damn is he tough. Negative Energy Zone shenanigans are a bitch to work through.

For a system, I'd use low, Paper Mario style numbers coupled with brief games of skill for timed hits. A single shot at Quarters is the best I can think of for basic attacks, but less common actions could require you to pick up as many jacks as possible in one bounce, catch a ball-in-cup once, or get a top to spin for more than a certain amount of time.

For fairness, the GM would either have to use dice rolls instead or be strictly adversarial. In the later case, the GM is actively trying to kill you but has to obey a point cap when planning encounters. This could fit nicely with a "GM is Bowser" motif.

What would the most popular races for a Mario game be?

Human, Toad, Shyguy, Yoshi, and Koopa are all shoe-ins with a huge variety of possible character builds. Goomba, drybones, and bob-omb always manage to show up in these threads as well. And personally, I think a Puni leader would make an awesome character race for the potential to play with swarm mechanics.

Are any others very important to somebody?

Koopa Troopa Careers

Koopa (First Tier)

This is the starting career for Koopas. These are newly enlisted soldiers in the Koopa Troop in need of training. From here, the Koopa earns his shell and becomes one of the most recognizable military troops in all of Marioland: The Koopa Troopa. Includes the basic combat abilites Punch, Defend, and Flee!.

Koopa Troopa (Second Tier)

The general infantry of the Koopa Troop, this is a Koopa who has earned his shell. In this career, a Koopa Troopa gains his definitive shell, providing much of their needed defensive power, and the most basic Shell Manuevers.

Requirements: None

Red Koopa Troopa (Third Tier)

The next level in basic Koopa Troopa rank, Red Troopas are awarded their red shell, and taught several new techniques, including general tactics and strategy, and Shell Manuevers. Koopas can only reach this rank by being promoted by their superiors; while anyone can wear a shell, it takes some smarts to know how to use 'em!

Requirements: None

Koopa Paratroopa (Third Tier)

The aerial aces of the Koopa Troop. These Koopas are awarded the winged shell, giving them the ability to fly, and are taught the amazing ability used by the Koopas' greatest antagonist Mario, the Jump ability. While it takes some time to master basic flying, these soldiers are still quite formidable. Taught basic aerial Shell Manuevers.

Requirements: None

>>3185949
Little Hammer Bro (Third Tier)

So, you want to be a Hammer Brother, eh?! Well, it's gonna take some doin'! A Little Hammer Bro is a fresh new recruit to the Hammer Brotherhood, yet to prove himself. He is awarded his very first Hammer, and taught the basics of combat. While this career does give greater offensive capability, the Little Hammer Bro has yet to earn his Hammer armor, and so still has to be careful. Taught defensive Shell Manuevers and Basic Hammer Manuevers.

Requirements: 6 Power

Magikoopa Apprentice (Third Tier)

A Magikoopa? Really? You think you have the smarts? A Magikoopa Apprentice is a Koopa who has ingratiated himself in some way to the Magikoopakademy (whew!) and begins his studies of Koopa Magic. He is given his apprentices robes (a rather muted brown), his apprentice wand (a rather muted brown stick), and his (you guessed it) apprentice spell-book. The Apprentice is taught the most basic of offensive and buff spells, but loses the ability to use Shell Manuevers.

Requirements: 6 Smarts
Coming: Lakitu and Super Koopa, as well as full progressions for the rest.

Alright, so, the game would need to have race-based classes, with 'sub-classes' similar to prestige classes in DnD. You'd eventually be able to mix and match classes and abilities. So, a guidelines list:

Koopa
-Paratroopa
-Hammer Bro
-Dark Koopa
-Koopatrol
-Lakitu
-Magikoopa

Goomba
-Spiked Goomba
-Paragoomba
-Hyper Goomba
-Gloomba
-Goomboss

Shy Guy
-Sniffit
-Jungle Guy
-Jester Guy
-Fly Guy
-Medi Guy
-Ghoul Guy
-Spy Guy
-Pyro Guy

Boo
-Blindfold boo
-Balloon boo
--Big boo
-Dark Boo
--Shadow Sister

Baby Chomp
-Chomp
--Red Chomp
---Stone Chomp
----Gold Chomp
--Big Chomp
---Chomp Shark
--Nibbles
--Flame Chomp

Lakitu (Third Tier)

Lakitu, that mysterious master of the clouds! Lakitu are Koopa trained in the use of Lakitu Clouds, which are obtained through trade with Nimbus Land. The Lakitu Corps is a prestigious organization, and thus doesn't let just any old Koopa join their ranks; some Koopas buy their way in, while others impress higher ranking members (for example, Lokitu, the clever leader of the Lakitu Corps). Either way, obtaining a Lakitu Cloud is no easy task. Lakitu are taught basic Cloud Manuevers.

Requirements: None

Super Koopa (Third Tier)

Super Koopas are the result of Magikoopa's experiments with the feathers of the extremely rare Cape Hawk; the subjects are endowed with Superkoopian strength and speed. But to properly utilize their new abilities, they must abandon their shells. To become a Super Koopa, a Koopa must successfully prove, without a doubt, his utter loyalty to Bowser and the Koopa Kingdom. Once this is done, the Koopa must undergo the test of worth, where the Koopa must retrieve the Cape Feather to be used for his transformation. Lastly, the Koopa must survive his transformation, and keep control throughout. Super Koopas are organized into the League of Super Koopas, and often are called upon to deal with the biggest threats to Koopakind. Super Koopas are taught basic Super Manuevers, such as how to fly, and how to control their vast power.

And I'm looking at how SMRPG and the Paper Mario games handled stats, as I'm trying to figure those out at the moment. I want to keep it light-hearted and silly (GLADBRIGHT as opposed to GRIMDARK), so Iso far I've come up with:

Power, representative of physical strength
Smarts, represents intelligence
Heart, represents the amount of punishment one can take, and how likely it is that one can take a courageous stand when near defeat

Weapon skill. (WS)

Armor save (A)

Toughness (T)

Balistic skill (BS)

Wounds (W)

Initiative (I)

Each atribute starts with 3 points in it (except wounds, all PCs and important NPCs start with 2, and BBEGS 3. Mooks get one tough.). Player characters characters start with 5 points to distribute.
Every fight they win they get 1XP. 10XP equals another point.

Speed: (S)
How many arbytrary units of movement you Can move per round. Normally 4 for humans.

Regras:

Attacking: Roll 1d6+str+WS-(T of the target). if the result equals or greater then 7 it's a hit. take off 1 wound point.

Ranged combat: Roll BS+Weapon strenght-(T of the target). if the result equals or greater then 7 it's a hit. take off 1

wound point.
The defender then get to roll his armor save. He rolls a d6. If the result is equal or greter then his armor save value, he

negates the wound.

Armor goes from 6 (light) to 2 (heavy armor + tower shield)

ALso there are advantages and disavantadges, but I can't be arsed to do it.
Here's 2 examples:
Advantage: Accelerate: (1pt) your speed doubles.
Disavantage: Cursed: (-2pts) each battle you roll a d6. in a roll of 3 or less, all your stats are reduced by 1

So our mercenary group, the Crashing Thunder Brigade (that's a story for another time), we're attacking this village-here's our characters:

Ice Cleft with the Arrogant perk (+2 Coolness +2 Heart) and the Stylish Sunglasses (HE'S SO COOL LOL)

Green Magikoopa with a Ptooie defender, actually quite good at what he does (buff the party then protect himself).

A Tanoomba with Mime mastered who favors turning into a Reznor after we met them in Dinosaur Land

A Pirate Shyguy named Shy Guybrush Threepwood (Seriously.)

And I'm playing a Red Bones disguised as a Troopea, so that whenever I act oddly I just tell them "That's how we do things in the Beanbean Kingdom." In character, they still have no idea. Even when the fake beansprout falls off ("it's supposed to do that").

So we're attacking this Toad village in the middle of the night, which this badly injured Koopa Troopa hired us for, claiming they had a powerful warrior with a Star (he joined us, too). We get there, and the place seems to be deserted, and it looks like it's been that way for a while. So our DM has us roll Smarts check to see if we "see it". We all manage to fail, so I use a Lucky Charm, because I know we're about to get fucked, and I make it. I look up and see a hugnormous sword soaring through the sky, and immediately FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-. A bunch of Yoshi-mounted Shady Koopas ride up, with Smithy's mark on their shells, and they ride right through us. The Koopa Troopa that joined us immediately knocks out Shy Guybrush, and so initiative starts. There were five riders, and we actually managed to wipe them out, through fantastic teamwork (The Green Magikoopa Electrified the Tanoomba turned Reznor, and the Shady Koopa leader actually tried to play chicken with him.) We find out from the Koopa Troopa that they were meant to capture us, but we couldn't get anymore information because he popped a Mario Decoy and we all failed our fear checks.

Imagine The Temple of Elemental Evil, Die Vecna Die!, Expedition to Undermountain, City of the Spider Queen, Sons of Gruumsh, all converted to Mario Land style?

Lemme see if i can contribute some suggestions to this epic thread

A big problem i think would be handling battles and wounds. It might be fun to avoid common RPG Death at 0 HP scale and put in something more Marioesque but not TOO 1 hit kill lethal

I was thinking like special "beaten down" levels

Stunned-No actions for 1D4 turns which could come from taking too much damage at once or something like a Sumo Bros stomp

Knocked stupid-Out for the duration of the battle. Can take no actions by lay there with swirly eyes and twitch.Gained from losing all health classic 0 HP RPG or failing fear checks really badly

SSMMMMAASSSHHHHed-Character is launched into the horizon indefinitely. The character is essentially removed from the game. They may be in any condition from stunned on the next continent to in a body cast for a month.Homage to Team Rocket Smash Bros and Earthbound

Its not any specific rules im throwing out just giving some suggestions.Take them as you will

Some ideas I jotted down while at work

Perk: "I met Bowser once!!" What a cool dude! When trying to impress others, you gain a +6 bonus to your Coolness check.

Perk: Thought-full: You sure are a brainy guy. Did you eat dictionaries when you were a kid or something? Gain a permanent +2 to Smarts. This can only be taken at character creation.

I had an idea for declaring a hometown/homeland/what-have-you at character creation, which can give nifty abilities and roleplaying options. Also, certain conditions in different areas in the world would merit different kinds of items, adding to diversity in equipment. Here's the example I thought up:

New Koopsburg: A chilly, somewhat smoggy, and very very busy town. Koopsburgians tend to wear beanie caps and wind breakers to combat the harsh, icy wind-plus they look pretty stylish! Citizens of this busy burg have a +1 bonus to Speed, representing their adaption to the frenetic life that takes place here. They also gain a -1 penalty to Heart, as the Smogg that lives above New Koopsburg is terrible for a Koopa's (or anyone's for that matter) health.

Also, when writing the eventual manual for the game, a narration something like Elminster and Volo in the Baldur's Gate II instructions would be hilarious. Imagine a self-proclaimed scholar teaching everything, and Kamek stepping in to point out his mistakes every once in a while. Example

*On the topic of Magikoopas*:

Scholar: "The grand and mysterious Magikoopakademy, whose location is almost legendarily secret-"
Kamek: "No it isn't! Everyone knows the akademy is at-"
Scholar "Will you stop interrupting me! I know exactly where the school is."
Kamek: "Really? Do tell!"
Scholar: "Oh...well...erm..."
Kamek: *sigh* "You don't have a clue. And you folks are trusting this simpleton to guide the way? What a pity."

Mushroom City/Toad Town: The heart and soul of the Mushroom Kingdom, not to mention the capital city; the city holds residence to Peach's Castle itself, not to mention a certain red-and-green duo live just outside the city limits. A pseudo-metropolis that somehow happens to be both quiet and busy at the same time. A port town as well as a central trading city, information, scholarly or otherwise, is always on the move through this city. It doesn't help that Toads are notorious gossips, too.
+1 Smarts to be able to keep up with all that information.
