What I like about it is that it can't be succinctly explained; it's a giant sprawling web of plots, driven along by some insane energy. Pynchon's sense of humour can be very cruel sometimes. I'm in tune with him, but it's really not for everybody.

I DID read all of this novel and I DID understand it and it was a shameful, sad spectacle. The characters (and, hey, a novel is supposed to have them) were more wooden than mannequins. The story, when finally discovered, sounds like a bad LSD flashback and a very silly one to boot. No one denies Pynchon's intelligence. I do not deny the intelligence of the unabomber either. I just think what he wrote was tripe (Like what Pynchon writes).

I thought this novel was a complete waste of my time and it amazes me to hear so many praise what I think was paranoid and resembles silly cult literature. My father had a book back in the fifties sponsored by an extreme right wing group that was equally paranoid and absurd. The whole tone of that bizarre publication resembles the tone of Gravity's Rainbow. But at least the fifties book had some unintentional humor in it. Pynchon couldn't write anything funny if his life depended upon it.

Okay, imagine that you write a bunch of completely disjoint, rambling junk that seems to have no real connection to anything else in your story, and stretch it out and go on and on and on for hundreds of pages, and people call you a genius!!! What the heck is wrong with the world? This book was less fun than getting a tattoo. I couldn't sustain it anymore after 75 pages, and I gave up. I still have absolutely no idea what was going on, who any of the characters were or what they were like. Must have been authored by a child.
If you want a pretty clear picture of this thing, I'll say this:
Imagine a senile old person accosting you on the street and running their mouth about absolutely nothing for awhile. You might be paying attention, but after they leave you won't have a clue what they were trying to tell you. This is Pyncheon in a nutshell, and the man should be avoided at all costs, and his entire literary genre, whatever the heck you call it, should be collected and burned, along with all of it's pretentious followers.

Maybe it's entertaining if you take huge quantities of lsd, otherwise it's a nightmare. Pynchon forces offensive, sexist, nonsensical free-associations at the reader for hundreds of pages. As an author he comes over like a sad juvenile craving attention. It might have been different and unique in the 70's, but there are better examples of this kind of writing available now. All I wanted a well-written, cool story (sort of sci-fi/literature), unique characters, good setting and thought this might be the book, boy was I wrong. You suffer reading this "book", but that doesn't make it worthwhile.

El desorden y las palabras que parecen inventadas hacen que el lector pierda el interés en el relato que da muchas vueltas en el primer capitulo. Creo que las novelas largas deben atraer al lector y ser más livianas que las pequeñas, pues hay mas posibilidades de dejar el libro a la mitad si es pesado y de terminarlo si aunque sea pesado, es corto. Habrá mucha gente que le leerá y que no dejen que este comentario los desanime, pero hay escritores que no se hicieron para mí y creo que este es uno de ellos.

Where were all the good battle scenes? Where were the monsters? There were hardly any other creatures of interest besides Orcs and Hobbits. That's basicly it.
I just don't like any of the lord of the rings books. I want action books, not only with action, though. I don't expect an action scene every two pages, I just want an action scene atleast every one hundred pages! I also want a book that has SOME KIND OF EXCITEMENT OR A HOOK! the books didn't supply that at all. Plus, theyre frustrating. Why are they frustrating? I bought this book expecting to be able to use it to help me teach the Months of the Year to my daughter. The little poems in the book are totally UNrelated to the months of the year. The only mention of months are at the top of the page. I am sorely disappointed and my 4 yr actually was quite bored with the VERY TINY book. The price of this selection should be around .50 because that is about its value.
