I was thinking about how people seem to like writing creepypasta about lost episodes of childrens' shows in which terrible things happen. These seem to disturb people because they pervert memories from a time when they were mostly innocent.

Then I started thinking what if you did it with a video game everybody knows, like Super Mario World? The story would be something simple, a guy goes to a flea market and buys an SNES and the cartridge on a whim, but when he gets home and starts playing, things aren't like he remembers. At first the color just seems off and the music sounds glitched, then he notices that every ? block had already been hit and there are no enemies, Mario is entirely alone. He takes the game out and blows on it, but nothing changes. He decides he must have a glitched copy and keeps playing to see what else is messed up, but the more he plays, the more disturbing it gets. In the end, he is compelled to upload the ROM onto the internet and kill himself. At the end of the story would be a link to a ROM that would be hacked to be like the one described in the story. You could post the story and game to different video game message boards and watch people shit bricks.

Now I wouldn't know where to begin hacking a ROM like this, but I figure it might be fun just to talk about it and see what other people think. Do you think this is a good idea, and what are your ideas for making Super Mario World into nightmare fuel?

I'll post my ideas for the first world.
>> Anonymous 04/24/10(Sat)21:14 No.4146362
So like I said in the first level, there's no enemies and all the blocks are hit. The yellow block switch has already bet flipped and all the mushrooms have been taken out of the blocks. The moving platforms no longer move at a constant speed, the water in the water level has stopped flowing and become stagnant, and the lava in the first castle has cooled down and solidified.

The end of the castle is when you realize that this isn't just a glitched ROM. When you get to where Iggy Koopa is supposed to be, the princess is dead and nailed to the wall. It is made clear that she blames Mario. The only way to exit this level is to jump into a pit, and over the course of the game you go through a nightmare version of Dinosaur Land, and it is revealed over time that Mario died in the fall, all of his friends are dead, Bowser is dead, and it's all his fault.

At ramdom points in the game it should flash to Mario lying in the bottom of the pit mangled and paralyzed and then later dead and decaying but the nightmare won't stop.

At least /v/ might keep the thread bumped.

As for ideas, since Toad is like a helper in the real games, he should show up every once in a while to make things more difficult for Mario, but like he's sewn together from goomba parts and basically looks like an abused rag doll. He could like randomly appear and move the exit of the warp pipe you just entered into lava or something.
>> Anonymous 04/24/10(Sat)22:08 No.4146970
At the end level screen random words should stream. as the game progresses the text should get more structured revealing a lovecraft-esque rant about the hollowness of existence... also really freak them out by putting human faces contorted in agony on all the shy ghosts...

All the bosses should be like this. The final boss should be Luigi. during his level you go through Mario and Luigi's childhood, Luigi is scared all the time, but he always tags along with his big bro because he knows Mario will protect him.

Cut to Luigi being brutally tortured and screaming for help on a high platform, but every time you jump to get to him the platform moves higher. All you can do is wait out the clock, but when it reaches zero, it keeps going on into negatives, and then into weird numbers like the minus world in the original game. It does this until you turn the game off. This is the end of the game and Mario can never leave.

Why dead?

Couldn't he have just hit his head or something, waking up later to a ruined world he didn't prevent from coming to be?

The spirits that blame him still haunt the kingdom and punish him for not saving them.

I'm just kinda tired of the " it was all a hallucination in the moment of death" thing.

Just a suggestion.

So how should this "story" play out to the reader? Would it be a fake news article, a journal entry, an anecdote from an acquaintance of this guy who plays the game, or what?

I think fake forum posts would be good, kind of like that "Candle Cove" thing.

A good example of creepy things that could happen is in a flash game called "You Only Live Once". This game takes it in a lighthearted fashion but it could EASILY be made amazingly creepy.

Great idea. I'd like to help develop this as well. What if, for the first boss, instead of fighting something, the magma had hardened over the turtle thing. Part of him could be sticking out, and the wall could be crumbled? Then you could walk through the wall to the next section?

Any help would be awesome, but like I said I don't even know where to start. Guess I'll start reading about ROM hacking.

I like the idea of not fighting anything for the bosses. Mario should be completely helpless against them.
>> Anonymous 04/24/10(Sat)22:37 No.4147212
Random images of burning skies and dead bodies should replace the background along with blaring white noise.

lives should start at 99 and count downward randomly.

i figure most nes and snes roms can only do midi music (i dunno though cause i'm not a codefag) but maybe kids singing the alphabet with clicking noises could be inserted? o.0

Im busy ATM coding a game like this. i claim it to be a very early computer/arcade game which i am emulating for the worlds enjoyment.

the game is called ENTITY and starts off as a very regular pixelated shoot em up where you can move up and down and shoot at red zombies which come at you.

however the further you get into the game, i have coded a timer for things to happen. for example play for ten minutes and the trees have, bit by bit, grown longer and obscure the environment. play for longer still and the gore slowly increases, as does the detail of the player and the zombies.

the enemy types become freaking insane and disturbing (fetuses and stuff) and a screaming emerges from the background static.

so if you are fucking insane and play to the end random faces flash in the corner of the screen and a voice speaks to you underneath the screaming until you reach a gray page with black writing in cyrillic or something and the game will automatically close.

That would be a cool way to end the game, actually. Make it end on a glitch so that people never figure out what the "big reveal" is at the end or whatever.

Great ideas. I think it should be more like candle cove, to whoever mentioned that earlier. Spreading it around is just going to create flame wars and only interest newfags. Making it like it was already a pasta is the best way to go about this, imo.

Exactly. Also allows everyone to toss in their own opinions without it being much of an issue. You'll have the half who spread the suicide news and stuff, the side who calls bullshit on it, and the people who can make their own call, making it creepier. But one suggestion: with suicideouse.avi and such, I never found it believable (besides the obvious) because who would upload it right before they die? can we have another way for it getting online?
>> Anonymous 04/24/10(Sat)23:32 No.4147720
So for the worlds we can stick with the OP's suggestion of having the first level be like someone's already been there and killed all the bad guys and hit all the ? blocks...

The second world should have a glitched Luigi show up several times, saying things like "Haven't we already been here?" then "You really don't want to continue." to "I'm warning you!" and finally "Now you've done it!"

The Vanilla Dome, world 3, can look like hell or something.

April 24th, 2010

Today, I got really bored.

Not just bored, REALLY bored.

Like, I was so bored that I couldn't even entertain myself with my normal games. Left 4 Dead fell short, since all my partners were always retards, COD got real dull, real fast, with all the damn hackers...

So, I decided to go retro. I looked around my room and finally found my old Nintendo. I was pretty sure it still worked. I opened the lid, took a can of spray air, and blew the thing out. Tons of dust. I nearly choked to death on all the dust.

I hooked it up to my TV, a real pain considering all the adapters I needed, but I had them. But still, all the games I had were boring.

So I went to a used game store. I think the name of the place was Brandon's, or something like that. It was the only one in town that still sold retro games, though it was starting to phase them out like all the others.

I looked around for a bit, but nothing really caught my eye. Then, I noticed it.

Normal enough looking case. Except, the cover, where it would normally show the games name and all that, was completely torn off, except a tiny sliver. It looked like the first Mario game, but I wasn't sure.

Out of curiosity, I bought it. If it wasn't worth it, I'm only out ten cents, no big deal.

By the time I got home, though, it was too late to bother with the game. I live out in BFE, so travel times to town are pretty long.

I'll play it tomorrow.

((What do you think so far? I'm going with the journal approach. Yes? No? Anything need changed?))

Another idea I was thinking of:

You know those speaker blocks? Someone has been using those to leave messages to Mario. They can provide some of the back story instead of cutscenes.

Some of them could be like YOU KILLED THEM ALL AND NOW THERE'S NO WAY OUT and some could be like "I'm so lonely Mario please don't forget me again"

Maybe at the end it's revealed that Mario has been doing this over and over for a long time and has been leaving messages to his past self.

Just putting stuff out there.

That's true, this is starting to get a little too complicated. Here's what I think it should be limited to, and it seems like something that anyone with basic ROM hacking skills could do:

- Music distorted in some way
- All boxes are gotten, coins collected, no enemies, water doesn't move, lava solidified, pipes leading to nowhere (or to some horrific scene)
- An intentional freeze-up at the "end," possibly initiated by Luigi.

Also, what if there was writing on the background walls and stuff (possibly in blood) as if Bowser or someone had gone through the level before and written it? Things like "it's all your fault" and "they waited for you" and "you failed them." Just something unsettling.

Then,on the end of the stage, another pipe, leading to the exit, with an info box saying something like "Nothing is quite as you remember",but creepier

It would take someone with some damn good animation skills...

Perhaps part of the normal animation cycle of the enemies could include a speech bubble popping up that says "release me from this torture" or something. I haven't played this game in forever so I'm not sure, but when you stomp on enemies, does the little "100" thing come up, like the points you're gaining? You could replace the "100" with "thank you"

I think there are ways to do it.
They're distorted/clearly in pain/crying until you jump on them. When you do, the enemy dissappear and yout hear a low "finally" or "thank you" in the background.Every kind of enemy should have different sayings, like: a goomba says "thank you" in a deep and sad voice, while those old men that throw hammers will only make a deep sigh in relief

Or,what about this: the music get some screams mixed with it,and everytime you kill something, one scream stop, meaning that the "enemy" found peace at last

I think there should generally be no enemies to make the world seem more barren, but on the other hand enemies like the flying evil mask thing from Mario 2 tend to scare the hell out of people.

If there are enemies, I think they should be frightening and unkillable like the mask, but few and far between so that the player is anxious that they might show up but they're so rare that it doesn't take away from the feeling that Mario is in a dead world.

Brainstorming is good.

Yes,but connect the idea to my prevous "Pipes/underground" post.
Maybe enemies should be a bonus only to secret levels, but if it's to be done, let it be done right. Only in absurdly hard secret levels with seriously fucked music and characters appearing on the background, shouting at you, cursing you for letting them die, maybe bowser laughing at you.
then, when you get to the end of the level, you see a message on the background: "You let us here again Mario...Let us here to die,or bodies to rot." and something about everyone trusting mario and he failing them.
And about the sounds, now that I thing about it,it would get repetitive if there were too many enemies

I always liked Super Mario 64 when I was a kid. I remember playing it at my aunt's house all the time. Well, one day a pop-up appeared out of nowhere as I was watching gameplay footage on Youtube. I was a little startled, and was about to close the window, until I realized that it was a website showing of a mint condition copy of Super Mario 64 for sale. There was a picture and everything. I usually don't trust these things, but the feeling of nostalgia overpowered me, and I wanted to buy it.

The whole business was peculiar, seeing as how the owner of the game wanted the buyer to send an envelope containing $10 to and address on the site, instead of using something like PayPal. What made things even more strange was that when I tried to gain access to the website (I wrote down the URL) after encountering...problems with the game, the page was nowhere to be found.

A few days after the $10 was mailed, I got a package containing the new copy of the game. The first thing I noticed when I opened the small box was that the "official sticker" with Mario flying in the air was apparently peeled off or something. In it's place was a piece of duct tape with "Mario" crudely written on it in permanent marker. I felt a little ripped-off, but as long as the game worked, I didn't care.

I got out my Nintendo 64 and put the cartridge in. The screen turned on with the familiar Mario face that you could stretch and twist aimlessly. I remembered laughing all the time at the results as a kid and decided to mess around for old times sake. I moved the cursor over to Mario's ear and pulled it to elven proportions. I was going to do the same to the other ear, when the TV suddenly produced loud static. Mario's whole head started deforming and twisting in ways that I didn't even know were possible for the model. Random sound effects from the game started playing along with the static. As all this was occurring, I could hear a faint voice whispering in Japanese. The voice was stammering and whimpering.

I immediately shut off the game and tried again. I didn't bother with the Mario head this time. Just selected a new file and started playing.

When I selected the file, the game skipped the opening monologue by Peach and the courtyard outside. Mario was just placed right inside the castle. Creepier still, Bowser didn't say anything either. I tried to ignore it and played anyway. However I also noticed that their was no music. Just dead silence. Their weren't even any Toads around to talk to. The only door I could enter was the Bob-omb Battlefield. The other doors wouldn't even respond to my button commands.

The portrait to Bob-omb Battlefield wasn't the usual picture. It was just a stark white canvas. I was still trying to convince myself that these were just minor glitches, and that they wouldn't effect the gameplay at all. Once I entered the portrait, the image suddenly went from a blank canvas to the Lethal Lava Land painting. You know, that slightly unsettling image of the flame with the evil smile? Yeah, that's when I started getting really suspicious.

My final thought on enemies:
If they're there at all, they should be dead. Just props. Maybe a random goomba or turtle lying there dead once or twice per level.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:18 No.4148209
>>4148200
The mission select menu came up, and yet another weird detail was present. Instead of "Big Bob-omb on the Summit", the mission was called "TURN BACK". I have no idea what drove me to press A, but I did.

The level seemed normal. Everything was how I remembered it. I thought I could finally enjoy my favorite childhood game. But then I saw him. Luigi. I was absolutely shocked. He was never in this game. His model wasn't even a Mario palette swap. He looked like a completely original model. Luigi just stood there until I tried to approach him. He started running at unexpected speeds. I followed suite and went through the level. Strange things happened as I pursued him. each time I picked up a coin, the enemies and music would get slower, and the scenery would look darker in color and more morbid. It kept gradually getting worse until I collected a 5th coin. Then, the music just stopped. The enemies laid down on the ground like they were dead. I was seriously freaked out, but I kept chasing Luigi.

I went up the hill. No cannon balls rolled down trying to knock me over. I really wasn't surprised at this point. Luigi was always just out of my sight as I ran. Once I reached the summit, I saw yet another object out of place. A small cottage was all that was seen on the top of the hill. Luigi was nowhere to be found. The cottage was certainly od looking for a Mario game. It was old, plain, and broken down. Regardless of my fears at that moment, I had Mario enter the cottage.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:19 No.4148216
As soon as the door closed. A disturbing picture of a hanged Luigi immediately popped up along with a very frightening scare chord. It sounded like a violin screech accompanied by loud piano banging. Mario fell to his knees and sobbed for roughly 5 minutes, then the screen irised-out.

I returned to the castle. Mario just slumped out of the painting. The image switched from the Lethal Lava Land portrait to the image of Luigi hanging himself. The room was different this time. It was now a small hallway. Toads with blank expressions and white robes lined the sides of the hallway. Their was another painting at the opposite end that just completely and utterly scared me. It was a picture of my family It wasn't even a photo from the time Super Mario 64 was released. It was a very, very recent photo. I remembered posing for it last weekend.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:20 No.4148223
I reached for the on/off switch on the N64. There was no way I was going to play this anymore. However, when I flipped the switch, the game was still on. I flipped it back and forth, but to no avail. I tried unplugging the whole system, but it never left the screen. I was even still able to control Mario. I couldn't just leave it on forever...so I kept playing. I went to the photo of my family, and jumped in. Only one mission was available, of course. This one was called "Run, Don't Walk". I selected the mission. 'Let's-a-go'...

The level started in a flooded hallway with platforms floating on the water. Mario landed on one of these, and the camera turned to show what was behind. A silent black void was slowly approaching Mario. It didn't look like anything. It didn't even look like finished graphics. Just a giant, blocky, black blob. I started jumping from platform to platform. With no goal in sight, I kept running, the darkness slowly but surely gaining speed. This kept going on for what felt like hours. I was really doubting there would ever be an end. Mario was just going in circles. Finally, the black blob/void/thing caught up with Mario, and enveloped him in darkness. He didn't scream or resist at all. It just consumed him.

Mario fell out of the painting and back into the castle. I lost one of my 3 lives. The room was different now. Some of the Toads were gone, and the painting looked different. My family and I were in the same positions, but our bodies were partially decomposed. It looked too real to be photoshopped. It looked more like someone just took our dead bodies and posed them.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:20 No.4148229
Regardless, I jumped into the painting again. Mario was in an small room. There was still only one mission available. It was called "I'm right here." spelled just like that. I selected the mission and prepared for the worst. Mario landed in a small, dark room. There no visible way out. The room was empty except for a piano in the corner. I knew what that meant. i was stuck in there with the Mad Piano. I approached it and it started chasing me as always. There was no way to damage it, so I had no choice but to let Mario take damage.

When he lot all his health, the usual death animation didn't happen. Mario just got mauled by the piano. He fell as his blood and guts spilled on the floor, and the camera panned to a top down view of his corpse. A distorted version of the merry-go-round music from Big Boo's Haunt played as the screen slowly transitioned from the in-game shot to a photo-realistic sketch of Mario's dead body in the same view as the shot. It was very unsettling. I was crying softly as I gazed upon the image. I lost another life.

The photo of my family was shown again. We were even more rotten then before. The view zoomed into the painting, like I was warping again. I was greeted with a shot of Peach's castle from the outside. The castle was crumbling in ruin. The fields were on fire. The sky was pitch black. Bowser's laugh played on a loop in the background as children mockingly chanted "You couldn't save her!". This went on for a long time, until, a close-up of of Peach's face accompanied by an extremely loud screech interrupted the loop without notice. Peach's mouth was wide open as if she was screaming, and her eyes were empty, black holes.

if you think about it, what would be creepier, a game that you remember, but just slightly off, or a game that was obviously re done to be "creepy"? the glitch thing sounds cool, the Halloween remake ideas sound cheesy.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:21 No.4148239
Suddenly, I was back in the hallway as Mario was once again ejected out of the painting. Now all of the Toads were gone, and me and my family looked positively repulsive. Maggots were wriggling around in holes in our flesh. Guts were spilling out of our bodies. My dad's eyeball was hanging loose from its socket. It was too much to bear, but something still urged me to trudge on. I jumped into the painting, with only one life remaining.

This time, there was no name for the mission. Just a blank space where the title would be. I selected the mission, and Mario landed on a very small island in the middle of the ocean. There was a solitary sign. It only read "DIVE". I did just as it said and entered the water.

The ocean was dark and empty. There were no fish. I wasn't even able to see anything in the water besides Mario. I swam downwards. I kept going for quite some time, yet Mario never ran out of breath. I counted roughly 10 minutes of swimming until I decided to go back up. Just as I turned Mario around, it came. A huge, and I mean huge Unagi the Eel came out of nowhere and swallowed Mario whole. I was dumbfounded. It went by so fast I wasn't even sure what I saw. The Game Over screen didn't show up. All that happened was a fade-out.

The photo of my family and I was shown again. We were plain skeletons now. Once again, it looked very real. I couldn't move the camera at all. It just stayed focused on the picture. I shut off the game and turned it on again. I chose my file, but it just went to the skeleton photo of my family. I tried this about 3 more times before giving up. I desperately wanted to stop, but some force kept me from walking away. I decided to select the only other saved file. The camera once again focused on the skeleton picture, but this time they were in a different position. As if they were a different family.

Johnny Truant plays SMW, eh? I like it.

But yeah, story is a pretty bad idea. As are all the "you failed us" things. Just make it unsettling. I also like the idea of pipes leading to horrifying scenes, though. They could be the same caves as usual, but filled with the aftermaths of terrible occurrences. Not specific things like people who have killed themselves, but just blood, fire, weird stuff like that. Probably not in all of the pipes, though, that'd be too predictable.

Fine with me. In any case I think the best thing to do would be to take the ROM and remove all the enemies and change the backgrounds and music and then decide what should be added. I'm messing around with the first level now. I should be able to upload the ROM with level 1 changed soon.

In lunar magic you can have several different backgrounds in one rom. With each level make the background darker and gloomier, like level 1s graphics are unchanged but 2-1 is getting darker, with it very grim at the end. I'm thinking brown cruddy, but the last levels black on white grim. Also, maybe force the player through Donut Secret to Bowser? Anyways, we better get contacts and stuff down for this. I can do some light editing, sound fucking-with, and some hacking. Email in email field, if we're gonna be serious we need to work together.

"Just downloaded it...

I don't know what glitches you're getting, but dude, I'm getting some F*CKED UP stuff in this...

There's no enemies. I've run the first level six times now, and there's NOTHING attacking me.

Not to mention, all the boxes are already hit, so I'm stuck as mini-mario with no coins...

I'm deleting this thing. It's not worth my HD space."

I don't think that there should be many enemies. Some, but they can't actually hurt you. Depending on the level of gore present, they should either splat when you jump on them or just disappear, and Mario falls through them. Near the end of the game, they should start glitching with parts of them shifting away or changing shape as the timer ticks down. Also, I think the idea of a single shell slowly spinning near the end up the second or third level would be good.

As for music, I think the first few levels should be normal with a slight difference in pitch or speed. After that, have the music stop playing around the halfway point of the level. Maybe near the end of the game, the normal stage music plays, and eventually a new warped track starts playing over the normal one.

For graphics, I really think a slow start would be good. Slight color changes or a flickering effect to certain sprites occasionally. Also, I think that most of the pipes should be broken near the end and look like glitches have corrupted the sprite in the beginning. There shouldn't be more than two or three working pipes, one of which takes you into a toad house with a dessicated-looking toad corpse while another dumps you into a room with only the pipe you came in through in it. After going back through the pipe, it should dump you out into a pit, restarting the level with a damaged looking Mario. From that point on, Mario should slowly look less healthy in the following stages, eventually losing an arm near the end.

Also, there should be no story. Glitched out cutscenes in the beginning and end, but just let the unpleasant nature of the game carry the mood.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)00:37 No.4148408
Ahem...

okay so far i like the glitched music turning into white noise as the game progresses, the pipes should go to the room that was in the original game but empty of coins and such. instead leave messages on the back wall that pertain to the cursed nature of the game (stop playing, death at 6-1, can't you see whats going to happen, etc. etc.) no enemies, possibly corpses of enemies throught the game. it should be tweaked so mario can't die (the game wants you to play to the end). backgrounds go creepy for short intervals, and the freeze glitch...

as for backstory, trust me, keep it light. i'd even just post it up with no info on what it is, and leave it for a time to be downloaded and slight word of moouth, THEN introduce the suicide story. maybe someone found a way past the glitch and the result was so soul crushing he had to off himself. keep it short and simple and let the user do the work for you...

An idea for what could happen at the 'end' of the game is that Luigi appears at the end of the map. He's not doing anything, just standing there. When you get closer to him, his sprite starts to distort, the music turns weird and the game glitches out. No storyline, just pure glitchy creepiness.

Just tried it, and it seems good. However, the music is still there when you finish the level.

This did remind me of some things, though. When underground, we need to remove all the shining stone in the background. If you do put something about a virus, say that the harddrive started to spin out of control, whirring uncontrollably, and cause multiple things to break down.

There is another copypasta out there that had to do with a virus, and it COMPLETELY ruined the story when it said that the virus damaged every single computer that person had. ( Mac/Linux would have prevented this - so make it into some kind of hardware problem. )

I know I'm late on this, but in addition to the game telling the player to upload it, it should try to connect to the internet and perhaps a specific web page. The page could count the number of times somebody has installed the game while connected to the internet. Only after a certain number of people played it, could the player continue on to certain parts of the game.

This way, people would have to spread it so everyone could play the rest of the game.

Guys, I have an idea for an ending...

You're in the middle of a level when suddenly you see Luigi. He's just standing there, facing away from Mario. He suddenly leaps (using the standard jump sound for the first time in the game), and turns (the way Mario does when he gets hit by lava when he's little and it kills him) to face the camera, but rather than falling off the bottom, he just stops. The screen fades to black and all that's left is Mario facing right, and Luigi staring accusatively at the player. A few seconds pass, and Mario turns to stare at you, too. The game just stays like this, with them staring at you, frozen, until you turn it off.

Well, what if the very first level, the first few blocks aren't hit? Including the Yoshi block. However, hitting the blocks doesn't produce a coin, and Yoshi's egg pops out and then sits there, never cracking, never hatching. However, Yoshi's text bubble should still pop up as if he was released, just a bit glitched up.

In later levels where all the blocks are broken, (preferably a water level) a Yoshi kid should appear right at the edge of the screen and then drop off into a bottomless pit.

First levels should probably have mostly normal jumps. Is there a way to tie the sounds to the timer? Maybe every 10th second makes a dull jump and every 15th causes a short one. As the game goes on, the intervals get shorter until it shifts up to a different sound, maybe the koopa bounce sound or a single note from the music. Something glitchy, eventually. Also, just having all sounds stop after the timer reaches 0 would be good.

Actually, it'd be pretty good to have some levels loop around on themselves and such, since the timer wouldn't cause death.
>> Sauber !f1v85QnTcU 4/25/10(Sun)02:09 < No.4149203
/v/bro here, if you want it to be just some creepypasta, yeah, go ahead with all the stuff like luigi being tortured and changing the game and having cutscenes etc
but if you REALLY, REALLY want to post it on an emulator forum, and have people think it's real, you can't deviate at all from the actual game.
You can have shit like dialog being tons of messed up text, fucked over animations, stuff like that, but you can never add or remove anything.
Weird music, glitched graphics, like, really glitched and all over the place, no coins, enemies, or mushrooms, etc, if that was all you did, and you didn't add anything like new cutscenes or luigi talking, then I think an emulator forum would buy it.
As soon as it seemed like the game was edited even in the slightest and it wasn't as if the rom was taken off of a normal cart they'd be all over that shit revealing it as a romhack.
I mean personally if it just seemed like the entire thing was glitched as shit but working and creepy as hell that would really make it seem a lot more real to me.
and I'd also ditch anything like the post saying "I have to share this and kill myself", that would pretty much just totally reveal it as a fake off the bat.
Plus, it would make the entire ordeal a whole lot easier than adding more cutscenes and whatever else.

Everything has to feel like a glitch.
Maybe the whole "no enemies" thing should be ditched, but most of the enemies should have stuff like broken sprites, completely wrong sprites, maybe a few should be normal.
it should DEFINITELY display a lot of consistency, all the koopas on a specific level should have a specific replacement fuckup sprite, and all the ones on another should be broken differently.
Glitches are usually veeerrrry consistent.

Also, My identity IS vital to this thread. I plan to write some OC Creepypasta and I use a trip for the parts to be easily identified as one story. I do usually post as an anon when I'm not writing something, or I don't want recognition.

It should be impossible to die (no bottomless pits) except in boss fights, where you HAVE TO die, because your ability to defeat the boss is gone. Once you die, it counts it as winning the level.

ROM was cash.

Few suggestions:
- Fix the first box and the lack of platforms in 3
- Maybe subtly rearrange some scenery (this would really mindfuck with people, recognizing a slight change, but not being able to put their finger on it.
- Having some enemies couldn't hurt, but like the above posts say, they should keep consistent.
>> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)03:10 No.4149850
My opinion:
For the first few levels, everything seems completely normal unless you enter the pipes. The pipes would lead to specific portions of a level later in the game (it seems normal), then soon you would be forced to enter another pipe (like with an unpassable wall) that leads right back to the level you were originally on. Then later in the game when you actually reach the later level, everything you did to whatever portion is still there, but now all fucked up (enemies are corpses/glitched sprites).

Clifford happily walked down the street one sunny day, playing his favorite game on his Gameboy. He did this quite frequently, and enjoyed combining the peaceful walk with the childish game.

Clifford was a boy of 13 years, and was about 5 feet tall. He was what you'd call an average teen, except much more innocent. He had been given a strong Christian upbringing, and knew little subjects like violence and sex. All and all, he was ignorant of the worlds true natures. He knew in his mind two things for certain though.

1. God is real and you must follow his will.
2. Demons are real and very evil.

The two facts had been burned into his mind by his God-Fearing parents, who hoped to make a God fearing child.

And now this God fearing child was walking down a suddenly empty street. No one around. Not a peep from anything but his Gameboy speakers.

And had this child not been so innocent, he may of thought this odd, but he didn't see why he should find a problem with the sudden emptiness of a usually crowded neighborhood. He just continued to walk as he did on any given day. One eye on the game, another on the sidewalk. Clifford was now very adept at multitasking.
>> TheIdealist !!ZfPWWNCRH 04/25/10(Sun)11:22 No.4151573
>>4151571
In his innocence, Clifford did not think that the game cart he soon spied in the middle of his path to be someone elses. He didn't think much of picking up the suspicious little object. The cart itself had it's label ripped off, and looked to be beaten and old.

Still, Clifford thought little of it. A new game? One of those video carts he had seen once at the store? Only a quick try would tell him the truth of it. So he popped out his game, and carefully slid it into his left pocket. Then slowly and gently, as if too much pressure would damage the system and game to the point of destruction, he pressed in the mysterious cartridge until he heard a gentle click.

The game now in, the neighborhood still quiet, Clifford flipped the power switch up.
>> TheIdealist !!ZfPWWNCRH 04/25/10(Sun)11:24 No.4151581
He saw the normal logo from the console loading up flash by on the screen, and then nothing showed up. Just a black screen. He thought of resetting it, but suddenly, the screen started to slowly change colors and play some slow, quiet music. Clifford began to walk again, slowly trying every button, trying to find anything that would produce a response from the new found game.

This now consumed all his attention, and he didn't see the rock in front of his left foot.

SMACK

He stumbled on the rock, feeling lucky after avoiding a fall. But what did fall made him just as upset.

His Gameboy was on the concrete, screen smashed, music blaring. Except it didn't sound the same. It sounded different. As if it was playing backwards. Soon the sound filled Clifford's ears, and he felt dizzier and dizzier as the seconds passed. Finally, without an ounce of resistance left in his mind, he fell to the ground. Confused and scared, Clifford passed out on the sidewalk. With no one to see, no one to care. And no one to help.

"?won doG ruoy si erehW" croaked out a voice from some place deep in Clifford's newly forming dreams. Clifford, now in his own dream, woke up in the same place he had fallen, music still forced into his mind, like an intruder. He prayed for it to go away, but nothing helped.

He stood up, more as rose up, backwards. His steps were going backwards, his movements backwards. His whole walk. All in reverse. All to the beat of the demonic song that blared in his ears.

Except something was different. The street was now bleak, not sunny, and no longer empty. Far from empty. There were creatures walking backwards in the opposite direction. Hellish looking creatures, resembling the demons he was so frequently told to avoid. They were all walking backwards, all speaking odd phrases backwards, and all smiling. Big toothy Cheshire-Cat-Like grins.

Clifford looked down and saw blood flowing from the ground into his stomach, as if he had been cut open and was regenerating. Finally the cut sealed as one last creature walked by. Everything stopped, and for a moment, Clifford couldn't move.

The music had stopped with the movement, and suddenly is started again, but in the style it had first began. It played forward, and Clifford moved forward, but still against his own will. And too bad for him, the creature whom had passed was still ahead, toothy grin and all, now walking straight for him. As it passed by Clifford felt a sharp stab, and looked down. He saw a cut leaking blood.

Clifford's entire walk relived itself in a worst-nightmare-style mirror image. He was loosing more and more blood, and eventually collapsed, dead, where he had first passed out.

The police found the dead body of Clifford in the middle of the sidewalk, with a Gameboy sitting in front of him. They heard a loud, almost painful to hear, music come from the Gameboy. But there was no game inside, and the batteries died before further investigations could take place.

Cliffords official cause of death was blood loss, but they did not find a spec of his blood on anyone within miles of the place he was found, or at the scene.

Almost as if someone...something had taken his blood...

As the officer walked back to his cruiser that day, the corpse in the hands of the paramedics, he heard a peculiar sound in the wind. It was some rather odd, very faint music. And he could hear someone say

"Where is your God now?"

Thats the end of it, and as I said, it isn't all that great. But its related to the topic...kind of. lol

I don't know my plans for today, as I have not made many. But I think I can stay here and bump for a bit.

I think I'll work on the music part of it. Does anyone have the sound files in MP3 format?
