Organizing wallpapers Anonymous 04/22/08(Tue)09:12 No.458428   [ExpImg]
My 4chan folder is starting to get a bit messy (pic related), so I want to clean it up a bit. I assume that most of you have been collecting wallpapers for years, so I'm sure you know what structure works best.

In short, how does /w/ organize their wallpapers?

I started naming and grouping my walls so that each folder would have the most walls in them. Example Starwars i went through all my walls any looked for anything that had to do with starwars. As i was doing this I found around 60 duplicates. most were the same wall just different sizes. now i know if they are any new black lagoon or chicks with headphones walls i don't have. I even combined some different groups to make 1 folder like I have a HaloHalflife, slayersSamuri7 folders i even have a GodziGokuGuyver or Godzilla,Gokuson,Guyver folder

I use danbooru ( http://trac.donmai.us ) ruby hard to install etc, but the php port should work as well ( http://trac.shishnet.org/shimmie2 )

Danbooru? I believe you just won the "best organizing system" contest. My stuff looks somewhat like OP's chaos, some structure will be a nice change. There's only one problem - I can't figure out where the download button is.

Two folders: 4:3, and 16:10.

If I find a particularly large collection of one show, I'll make it its own folder within one of those. Otherwise, just thrown in there with the default numbers.

Same, everything in one sorted by name folder sorted by name. Each wall is named by the show+a number so it's still easy to find.

Pictures -> (Here I have a few categories such as 'Anime,' 'Graphics,' etc.) Wallpapers

Pictures -> Wallpapers -> (Organized by series name, and if I don't know the series or it's not anime, it goes in the 'Misc' folder.

I got mine sorted by aspect ratios, content and size.

So, first:
4:3
Widescreen
Dual-screen
Triple-screen
Odd resolutions

The 4:3 folder is divided into Anime, Pretty girls and Other

After that, sorting is by standard resolutions.

I find it works well, although sorting 25Gb of wallpapers on those criteria took a while...

I have everything in one big folder (like many others), but all the images have default filenames. It gets kinda tiresome to find a specific wall that way. I'm thinking of making a wallpaper database application for personal use, although it's still in the planning phase... Maybe it would be useful for the average anon, too?

Wallpapers > Series name (or themes large enough to warrant it get a folder here. Landscapes/Catgirls/OS-tan/ect.)

Most folders only go that far. Folders with 200+ walls then get organized by character. If still 200+ (thankfully only happened once) I have another set of folders, going off anything that can take off a large chunk out of the character folder.

Then I rename them based on the folder(s) they are in to something like "Azu_Kagura_01"
>> Anonymous 04/22/08(Tue)18:09 No.458709
Mine are simply organized by interest or source.
Such as Women, or Gurren Lagann. Inside those folders they are organized by resolution proportions. Ergo Standard and Widescreen.
>> Anonymous 04/22/08(Tue)18:30 No.458721
my 9000+ pics are sorted by series. if one series has many files then there are sub-folders such as "walls". i also have some general folders sorted by resolution.

the problem i have though is that i want a way to browse them more dynamically. sort of like a photo organizer but with a slightly different set of features. for a start, the ability to sort/search by resolution. i have been playing with a design of my own, but it will be some time before it is in anyway complete.

if anyone knows of any good image organizers / browsers i would be very interested. particularly if they can do stuff based on the resolution of the image (all the photo-orientated ones have have tried can't).

Just run something like this locally http://konachan.com/post
Works for me. You can search for sizes, and tags. Also with all the ajax makes things easier to move and catalogue instead of folders and moving files.

If ruby is too complicated to install like this anon said >>458459 you can use shimmie, pretty much does the job, but no ajax, a little more rudimentary to work with.

There was akibakko too but the code is now closed source for now

After they get on the database they are named after their md5 and copied to a /data/ folder. Then with the md5 of the image it's added to the database with tags.

I delete the external file after it has been added to the database as it's pointless to have two copies.

During the week, if I get a wall that's the wrong aspect ratio or I jsut don't feel like sorting it at the time it goes to My Documents/Unsorted. At the end of the week I sort the folder out properly.

As for sorting, each theme gets it's own folder and each wall is named and numbered for that theme. For example: My Documents/Wallpapers/Hayate no Gotoku/Hayate 01.jpg Series' aren't the only themes, though, things like "Headphones", "Tech Girls", "Anime Angels", etc. are themes.
>> Anonymous 04/22/08(Tue)19:28 No.458773
Any non-tag sorting method sorta fails. An Image could fall in multiple folders

Well, if anon really wanted to know... here it is.
But relax, I have the same problem in sorting as the rest of you, as in these sorted folders contain about only 10% of the pictures on my computer, the rest are scattered god-knows-where.
Basicly, when it comes to walls, I just put them in the main section and sort out the junk after in other folders. 30.000 sorted, about a milion to go, lol

My filing system is similar to this Anon's. Everything is filed, labelled, and numbered by anime name with no distinctions for actual image resolutions. If I have the exact same image with different resolutions, tints, or backgrounds, then I sort everything around so the images are all next to each other so I can easily check for future reference and have virtually no chance of saving doubles. All random/unknowns go into a Random folder where they're labelled and subdivided by themes like "Headphones", "Christmas", or under the name of the artist such as "Carnelian", "Tony Taka", etc. Whenever possible, I try to track down the game/anime/artist of my unknown images so they can be labelled properly.

It's a bitch to sort out at first, but once you get into the habit of labelling them as you get them, it makes images much easier to find. Hint: copy/paste helps cut down the labelling time, but if anyone knows of a faster labelling method which can relabel whole folders at a time, I'd love to hear it.

In my pics folder i have a few sub folders like wallpapers, funny, 4chan, photoshop, materials, Made wallpapers, Cosplay... you get the point.

Everything is sorted except my wallpapers folder, which is a huge mess of randomness.

and if I am going to upload I make a dump folder somewhere else and copy what I need there and delete when done. i suppose in other situations that would be less than ideal but fwiw

1. make good use of the delete key. Stricten your choice = save a lot of time, you can't use all of them anyway unless you are running a server for others.

2. I use acdsee pro 2 to organize.
Can filter/group by tag, rating, (image/file) size, or other ways inside a folder;
Do quick search if you add keyword to favorite image (otherwise it can only search filename) etc.
DB Management (a DB would allow faster duplicate hunting)

but its not freeware

-play-lists: pre-defined lists of images for random desktop switching.
-tagging: needs no explanation.

though i suspect it will be some time before it is done. if i do ever write it, i will post it in /w/.

I wrote a script last night which intelligently downloads every wall on /w/. It maintains a database of metadata, which threads it's read, which posts it's seen, such that it only downloads thread pages or images when it hasn't seen them before.

When it downloads an image, it hashs it and checks if there's an existing hash for that image. If there is, it links the post's image entry to the pre-existing image and discards it.

The initial dump of /w/ done last night took about half an hour, downloading about 1200 images (taking up 1GB of space). I ran the script again this morning, took about 5 minutes to fetch all the new stuff. It's kind of slow because it fetches them in a linear manner, one at a time. Not the fastest for downloading, but it's nice on the server and easier to deal with code-wise.

The next logical step is to add useful image metadata to the database -- image resolutions, most frequent color in the image, average color in the image, etc. Eventually I'll probably write a tag system too, but it's a bit of a nightmare to even attempt to tag (what will be) thousands of images by myself.

Ultimately, I might hook this archiver up to some fat pipes (if I find a set of pipes fast enough) and write a web interface that's actually intuitive and easy to use. So you could search for red wallpapers with a 1.6 aspect ratio of minimum size 1280x800 and it would be able to pull those up, without any human help.

If I ever find some fat pipes, you guys will be the first to know :(

>what is it written in?
I'm currently studying C#, so it's written in C# Express.

>how does is store the DB?
I haven't done that much planning on the DB structure yet, but I assume it will be an xml-ish textfile containing all essential info.

>can it take into account existing directory structure along side tags? (e.g. on import auto tags based on folder names)
As of now, you are able to choose what subdirectories it should implement in the imagename/tags, and how it should be formatted.
For example you could get "4chan, anime wallpapers, azumanga" from this path:
c:\images\4chan\wallpapers\anime\azumanga\
Like this: "[2], [4] [3], [5]".

>can i get a copy to test / play with?
(i write the yuki.scr screensaver so can at least provide technical bug reports even if i don't know the specific language used)
Ofcourse you may, but right now it's next to nothing more than a basic GUI. I'll try to implement some more functions during next week, so there'll probably be a beta ready about then. Love your screensaver btw.

have you considered using SQLite? i have used it in several project with great results. plus if you ever want to up scale it is very easy to replace with MySQL or similar.
also, can it used the high-speed image loading interface that the default windows image viewer uses? I know there is an API into it, bit is a little fiddly to figure out. (the default one loads images faster than any other viewer i have tried.)
>> Anonymous 04/25/08(Fri)20:03 No.460962
>>460942
I haven't messed about with SQL stuff before, but maybe I'll take the plunge with this project. However, wouldn't that force the user to install an SQL server in that case?

When it comes to image loading speeds, I guess It's not the fastest thing in the world right now. Currently it clocks in at 2-3 seconds to load 16 images. The thumbnails you see on-screen are the actual images though, so when you want to see an image up close it's loaded instantly (as long as you cba to wait for the thumbnails). Thanks for the idea of using explorer's image loading API, I'll have a look at it when I get time.

Last minute note: It currently uses 25mb of ram whatever you do with it. I don't know if this is good compared to other tools like it - should I try to reduce it even more?

Another recommendation for SQLite (it's what I used for >>460935). SQLite is great because there isn't a server. Everything you need is linked into the project -- the database is a single file you "connect" to. For an application where there will only be one connection accessing a database, SQLite is key.

Additionally, it'll give you a good opportunity to learn SQL syntax, something that's really universally useful.

That's actually one of the features which pImgDB will implement. It will parse the Image URL directly from the browser (much like Chanmongler) and prompt you for information as it downloads.

>>461546
If you meant that it should have a big common DB of image tags, I don't know whether that's such a good idea. We're talking about /b/tards here, and they love to mess things up (bad tags on purpose). Also, I'm not really sure about Sourceforge - I was going to see how quick I could pull this off on my own once I get started, something like a personal test if you will. But great to hear that you want to join in, maybe I'll set up a SF-project later on.

don't worry about /b/tards doing bad tags, when it reads them you just need a batch strip and batch rename feature. (besides /w/ackos seems to get along a lot nicer with everyone)

what I would love is if download 100 pics from a thread just based on the tags with one or two clicks I could have them move to the correct directory (ie [default path]/[series]/[character/[res]

And also work in reverse, getting tagged based on the directory it is in.

check mp3taggers for more ideas

Okay then, I'll try to add some kind of tag-share system... I guess everyone would be happy if it's possible to choose whether it's active or not.

My plan was for pImgDB to move all the images to the same folder, and have the structure based solely on the tags. That way there wouldn't arise any problems due to foreign charsets. Maybe that's not such a good idea?

Tagging images based on their folder structure is alreadu a central part of adding images. That part is just about done, so atleast that's for sure.

Thanks for the tip about MP3 tagging software, maybe it'll be a good source of ideas.

>to move all the images to the same folder, and have the structure based solely on the tags.

You mean all the images would be in the same folder with no subfolders and everything is tag based?

Imagine this, you have a folder with 10,000 images and someone says 'I want the Bebop with his ship in space' and you use the util to find it and it's file 124423442134.jpg and you go to upload it and you have to select that file from the 10,000 others in that folder. Ugh.

Of course if that isn't what you mean tl;dr

Also! Can you borrow some code from Dumpchan and/or XchanDump to make an uploader?

That's not going to be a problem. See, I've added an export function. You can export a single file, a set of selected files, or all the search results to properly named files with a good folder structure whenever you need to. That way uploading stuff becomes a breeze. Does that justify the means?

Also, about the dumping - I never borrow code, but I plan to implement an uploader at any rate. It will probably not be implemented in the first version though, so don't hold your breath.

Oh, I forgot something rather important. You'll need to point the program to the folder with the images via the command line. The easiest way for any layman to do this is to create a new .txt file in the folder with CGADither. In the file write on the first line:
CGADither.exe <path>
where <path> is the directory of the images. For example:
CGADither.exe C:\Wallpapers

Save and close the file and then rename it to a .bat extension like "CGADither.bat". Now you can run the program via the .bat instead of the .exe file.

ok so for the tagger what I would like is a one-click mode:

Say you have 100 Azumanga group pics but there are different people in each one. I tell the program I am tagging Osaka pics, it gives me the Windows-explorer-esque thumbnail display of the files in the directory and I just scroll through and each pic I click gets tagged (or what until the end to do a batch if the proces takes more than a second)

Also you should be able to multi-tag this way so I could start with all the ones that have Osaka and Chiyochan and Tomo etc. As may tags as possible at once.

also we should be able to change the size of the thumbnail display so sometimes you have them little 20x20 or 800x600

and a sort by number of tags so that we can easily get all the no-tag and few-tags together to see what should be added
>> Anonymous 04/27/08(Sun)11:59 No.462323
ah, and for tag display there should be a 'display number of characters' setting so you can tell it for example to just show the first three letters of the Series Tag to see 'Azu' instead of 'Azumanga Daioh'
>> Anonymous 04/27/08(Sun)14:42 No.462433
>>462321
It's funny how we always have the same ideas. As of now, you select all the images just like in windows explorer, then you right-click one of them and select "Append tag(s)". That way the existing tags of each picture (if any) retains, and it will just append whatever you enter.

Also, about changing size - did you notice the text field to the left in the screenshot? There you can select how many thumbs you want displayed vertically, so that's already covered. ^^

I really liked the "sort by number of tags" idea. I've already added a "tag orphanned pictures" feature, but that only covers the pictures with no tags at all. Your method sounds much more efficient.

Finally, for the "display number of characters" idea - I guess that could be nice in certain situations. Sure, I'll drop it in.

That sounds like a good idea. Even though how each user tags their stuff is up to them, I guess I could add a list of "suggested tagging conventions" at the very least.

I sort my wallpapers by the Anime / Source from which they came (if there is no anime, then the artist fulfills that tag) and then sometimes by the characters in them.
(Example, if it is a single character wallpaper with Nagato Yuki from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I put it in the folder "\4chan\anime\wallpapers\Suzumiya_Haruhi_no_Yuutsu\Nagato_Yuki"
So I have the folder structure as follows:
4chan>type_of_image(anime/other)>resolution(wallpaper/other)>Anime/Artist>Character(if only single character in image)
I find it works pretty well for when someone tells me "I want a Yuki Wallpaper" or "I want a C.C. wallpaper" and I can just pull up the folder and say "Which one?"

As an added note, if I do not know the artist's name or the series name, I go to picture characteristics, like if the character is wearing glasses, or if it's a catgirl, etc.
I label those folders misc_catgirl or misc_glasses, etc.
On a side note, I usually prefix my misc. folders with "z_" so they show up after the sorted stuff, so I would have z_misc_catgirl or z_misc_glasses, etc.

I've been playing about with SQLite lately (what I might use to power the database itself) to see if it's worth it. I'm going to keep doing that for a few more days to make sure, then I'll resume the work on the application itself.

Everything might progress a bit slower than what I'd initially hoped for though; due a sudden change of plans my spare time will be cut somehow short. I'll do what I can, but there might not be any beta releases for quite the while yet.

Also, excuse me my horrible grammars - I'm dead tired atm.

i usually have one folder for some smaller images from 4chan, then one folder thats all 4chan usually wallpaper sized and larger, and one folder for moe.imouto.org
i have wallpapers i actually use in one folder and its not very big since im a bit picky with wallpapers sometimes. i usually use xnview and sort by width and find one thats larger than 1920x1200 and crop or make/clean up my own

basically i only use what i can use and whats displayed is controlled by wallpaper master.

If you can wait until pImgDB is done, you can use that as a batch renamer. It automatically renames the images to their MD5 checksum, and puts all of them into the same folder.

The idea is to make everything heavily tag-based, so I guess that will pop up sooner or later. Thanks for the idea though. Even though the wallpaper-changer is not the top priority on my todo-list, I'll make sure to have it done within the next few versions or so.

for example if I tell it to find 'Rei' 'Asuka' '1600x1200' '>1024x768' would it first give me all /Rei and Asuka 16x12/ wallpapers, then all /Rei and Asuka wallpapers >1024x768/, then all /Rei (no Asuka) 16x12/ wallpapers, then all /Rei >1024x768/, then all /Asuka (no Rei) 16x12/, etc?

Features that currently work:
- Batch import
- Searching
- Thumbnail overview
- Viewing images

Currently it does not show the images' names or information, just the images themselves. Also, note that I didn't mention editing, deletion, sorting or exporting as working features. That's why I ask if anyone's interested - to me it doesn't seem anywhere near good enough to bother, but then again that's just me.

If you're having trouble understanding how it works, try reading the fields you can change out loud.
Still don't get it? "Append value" "nature" to "Tags General" including "All images in database", though only when "Tags General" "contains" "trees, forest, etc."

Methods I've added until now:
Action to perform: Set value, Append value, Replace value, Remove value, Delete image, Select image
Tag/info type: Image name, Image rating, Tags General, Tags Source, Tags Chars, Tags Artists
Including these image groups: Selected images, Last search results, All images in database
Only when: See tag/info type
Comparing method: contains, does not contain, is blank, is not blank

I know I've forgotten a range of stuff I should add there, but what?

Features completed (or nearly so):
- Creating the database (lol)
- Importing images (drag/drop folders onto the program)
- Autotagging based on folder names (use {1}, {2} etc. and {fname} in tag fields)
- Editing tags on single images (should be rather straight-forward)
- Mass edit - add/replace/remove tags on groups of images
- Search - yeah, I don't think I'll need to explain what this does
- WP changer - can change walls automagically for you

Hotkeys:
Ctrl+Left/Right: Change image / thumbnail-page
Ctrl+Home: Go back to thumbnail view
Ctrl+Home in thumb-view: Skip back to first page
Ctrl+Del in full-view: Delete single image
Ctrl+Del in thumb-view: Delete selected images
Ctrl+A in thumb-view: Select/deselect everything (NO SHIT)

I am not sure if it'll be open-source, but it's quite possible. I've had some really bad experiences with that from earlier on, but this is merely an image database, anyways... As for the APIs, it's only using GetForegroundWindow and GetAsyncKeyState for the hotkey functionality and SystemParametersInfo for changing wallpapers. I guess porting it would be rather simple.

You wouldn't have to change anything in pImgDB itself to let it recieve tags from not4chan though - if the addon downloads the images to properly named folders, pImgDB can parse the tags from the folder/filenames.

Thanks for showing interest in the project though, I'll come back with the final decision once it's completed.

I'm away for the weekend, will have access to my windows development machine tomorrow, so I'll take a look then at how things are implemented.

If possible, I wanted the download extension to have direct access to the db, thereby allowing at a later time, an extension to post images through searching the tag db as well.

Some additional ideas:
- Dupe detection
- Automatically add tags (Colors, Objects, NWS, Etc)

Have some more ideas as I've been thinking of making something similar for a while now, but like most anonymous, don't have the drive to get started.

It's really funny how everyone get the same ideas when it comes to image databases. If you take a minute to skim through the thread, you'll notice that we've already discussed implementing an uploader. It is, in fact, well on its way to be completed - but thanks for the heads-up at any rate.

The idea of adding dupe detectors and adding tags based on the image content was something I haven't thought of yet, though. I guess there's still lots to be added, and I'm not one to do a half-assed job (well, not usually). I guess I'll work on this project until I've added every little feature (bloatware, anyone?), so it can take some time before it's completed...

At any rate, it's going to be atleast two weeks delayed now, due to exams coming up. So don't rush yourself with planning etc., you've got exceptionally good time.

One final note: This is still a beta, and there's lots of things (interface-wise, mostly) that I'm very dissatisfied of. Expect things to be much more user-friendly in the upcoming versions.

A single request/suggestion, since you're paying an incredible amount of attention to people's ideas.

Will it be possible to just load all the images on one's computer into a single view (obviously lots of scrolling involved there for some of us), then sort them by resolution? I tried this with Picasa, but you can't do it without manually adding all your image folders to an album, one at a time. Obviously a complex folder tree makes such a task more inconvenient than just making a backup one-folder image directory (which, in turn, destroys the folder organization.)

I don't know if the application already has this functionality, or if this is even in the original scope of the program, but I hope you can include this feature.

your getting into the history books

If you import all your images to the application by drag/dropping your entire C-drive onto the app (see >>472090 for instructions on keeping structure), you can hit the "Show all images" button to scroll through all of them. That's the closest thing I can think of, at any rate I doubt you'd manage to do it without importing the images first at any rate. If you have any ideas for improvement, please do speak up.

The thread's going to die very soon, so I suggest you ask questions on my forum instead - http://tib.110mb.com/viewforum.php?f=54 is the place to go.
