Yours, basically.
Pretty much the only mistake I made on my first build. The only other thing I couldnt get to work was the front USB but that was excused because I had to wire it myself (it didnt come in one neat "USB" plug block)

I don't have a "first build" per se, as I have learned from swapping parts (as opposed to a head-on method of buying everything at once). But still... here they are:
-Rosewill PSU (lol 65% efficiency)
-Shitty $10 Thermaltake heatsink (loud as fuck, and if I made the fan run any slower, the computer overheats and shuts down)
-Celeron D
-Sticking with AGP when it was being phased out
-VIA chipset for socket 478

Yeah. Fun times.

Hey, I'm about to make my first one, what advice do you have about cable management? I would think tucking the extra wires behind the case panel would pretty much do it.

Samsung HDD (died after 6 months).
My WD 1200JB which I bought after that (2002) still works fine, SMART status is good.

When I upgraded the system in 2006, I chose a cheap-ass PSU which almost fried me one day. Got an Enermax Liberty 400W since then, working fine on my current quad core build.

Er, they are for rising motherboards off the back plate of case where you mount it on, preventing short circuits and other fun things.
>>5537621
Stash the cables away wherever you can.
Behind the plate, behind the motherboard (works well with fan cables, depending on the pin location), inside the empty drive bay, etc.

Of course, you should also get a motherboard that allows good cable management... pic is an example of bad pin socket location.

I bought a great case for cable management, and I didn't try very hard with the cable management, so i can barely get the left side panel (the one behind the mobo tray) on.

Didn't have this problem but if you get a dead part on your first build it would really suck ass. If you have known good parts laying around you can switch every part until you find the dead one, but your first build means that you have no other parts besides the ones you bought.

Off brands suck, pay the extra $10 and you will eliminate sooo much headache.

Also I put wayy too much thermal grease which I actually didn't notice until about 3 weeks ago when I took my heatsink off to reapply thermal paste (I built the computer back in 2003). It was squeezed out by the heatsink and flowed all the way down the CPU.
