19 KB FASHION KNOWLEDGE - MODELING Roxy !!DIPV/OI0f No.593853
Hello /fa/, don't stand up. I'm here to drop some fashion knowledge on you. I think the most common source of comedy I get from my beloved /fa/ is all of your impressions on modeling. I mean I can understand if you want to market yourself to the opposite agency but you all take it to a new level. Let's start out easy eh?

First of all, almost everyone can be a model. All it takes is a douchebag with a camera and suddenly you're a model. However, it takes actual talent to be a "professional model." Those are the guys and girls signed to agencies and the ones who are actually paid. So the next time you see some retarded scenekid/miranda just remember, they really could model. But you can do anything for free if someone is willing to take you. For the most part though a majority of "models" have little or insufficient talent and from this point on I will be referring to professional models.

What makes a professional model? Well it needs to be a profession and while some models can manage this freelance most who can actually command payment are signed to a /modeling agency/.

There is a difference between a modeling agency and talent agency/talent search/model convention/scam. Model agencies are in place to book jobs and find work for the model and then take 20% of everything that model makes but if you're signed to one you have access to all of the high profile jobs unavailable to an unrepresented model.

Clients work through ad agencies who work through modeling agencies any other type of representation is a waste of money.

Modeling agencies have one job and most are based in the big cities i.e. New York, LA, London, etc. In order for you to be a professional model you have to be signed to a modeling agency for all intents and purposes of this FASHION KNOWLEDGE.
>> Roxy !!DIPV/OI0f 12/11/08(Thu)23:07 No.593865
So what makes up a professional model? Well it differs depending on gender and this is where /fa/ is very very very wrong. Female models have a very small window of acceptance, female models are expected to have or have close to by one inch maximum deviation a 34 inch bust a 24 inch waist and their hips must measure 24 inches.

The height is the real disqualification here and female models have to be at least 5'9 or they will not be considered competitive. There are exceptions to this rule however you have to be so stunning that this handicap is seen as trivial otherwise you're fucked.

Female model demand shifts from year to year and preferred hair color, eye color, skin color is dependent on the trends of that season. Female models are as young as 16 and are usually done with their career in fashion by 24.

For male models it's much more open, average male model stats are a 33-40 inch chest, a 29-32 inch waist (any skinnier and you're fucked, sorry /fa/gs), and hip size is usually unimportant. That's right /fa/ all of you out there that think that by rejecting exercise like a retarded Vietnamese hooker is the hot thing to do are fairly unfashionable.

Ideal shoe size for male models is a 10.5 and as always minimum height is 5'11 with maximum height usually being 6'2. Male modeling is a little more lenient and is much more accommodating than female modeling, however, male models are paid less. Most male models have longer careers in fashion.

So you think you have what it takes to be a model? What's next you ask? Polaroids. Polaroids simply stated are basic pictures you take of yourself with minimum makeup, styling, clothing, and an absence of photoshop.

Most agencies want to see a "pure" model and will throw out any over produced picture. Polaroids can be taken with any camera they just have to be basic snapshots thus the name "Polaroid."
>> Roxy !!DIPV/OI0f 12/11/08(Thu)23:09 No.593872
Once you have your Polaroids you have to print and send them to the agencies you wish to work at (preferably by mail) or submit them at an open casting call. Most of the agencies in New York take up to three weeks to send a response due to the sheer volume they get, most modeling agencies do not send rejection letters.

You should also include your name, address, phone number, measurements, eye color, hair color, and skin color all on an information card they can use to identify you, the potential model.

After you've submitted your Polaroids the agency may contact you again and request more pictures. You have either taken such pictures before you even submit like moi or you have to quickly find a photographer.

There are a lot of model sites online most notably model mayhem. It's a legitimate site that can help you hookup with photographers and always work for TfP (Time for Pictures) as professional pictures are a waste of money at this point. If you are short on effort you can always take more Polaroids, either way send them to the agency.

They will either tell you to submit again later, reject you, sign you, or ask you to come to New York for further inspection. Depending on which you will have to make up your mind as to what you want. Most models with a chance will have their travel arrangements paid for them as the agency is invested in the model.

Now you're signed, presumably, to a major agency in New York or perhaps even a smaller agency in some other city, either way you have work. Most agencies will bring you in and have you go to numerous casting calls for jobs. Most don't pay at all. Modeling is generally profit starved when you first start off. You're expected to purchase a lot of materials you don't have and the agency will forward you most of the money however you will spend most of the money you make modeling paying for.... modeling. Some models resort to moving to New York to model full time. Some models continue on to work internationally, many more drop out. At this point you either persevere or you fail. The International level happens and that's a ballgame I'm not familiar with.

So, that is YOUR FASHION KNOWLEDGE. Use it well /fa/.

Well, you're in luck. Most large cities tend to have one or two modeling agencies. The only "model friendly" cities in the United States are LA and New York. Some relevant work can be done in Chicago (catalogs) and Miami (fitness and swimsuit). Houston also has quite a few agencies for you to choose from although you will spend a lot of time having to drive up there for nothing. You can still model in other large cities but the work isn't as rewarding.

By the way, casting calls involve going to a location, posing once or twice, and generally getting rejected. If they're interested they might take a Polaroid or have you try on some clothing. A lot of time being a model is spent being rejected though.

Well like I said. "Model" is a very loose term. It's like any other term "basketball player", "piano composer", etc. You can do these things and do them by the loosest of definitions and you still meet the criteria of "someone who has composed for the piano" or "someone who plays basketball." Most models are random fuckheads who pose in front of their friend's shitty cheap camera and upload the pictures online.

It's typically better to go to an open call. Also you should NEVER EVER email your Polaroids or portfolio. Mail is always the way to go as it shows a professionalism in your intentions. Agencies tend to ignore emails because of the sheer amount they get a day it's almost always a better idea to show up in person as they get to see what you actually look like. However if you can't Polaroids in the mails are fine.

Roxy, great motherfucking thread. I seriously doubt I would be a very good model- I fit the specifics on paper, but fuck it, even I don't think I'd cut it- but it's always nice to know about that side. I've always kinda felt for models- there's something kinda awesome about being the guy sitting on the sidelines rather than dealing with some of the shit real models do.
>> Roxy !!DIPV/OI0f 12/12/08(Fri)00:50 No.594113
>>594104

There are always exceptions to the rule. Commercial modeling does need people of all sizes, however, the slots available for that kind of modeling is even more selective.

Kate Moss has other redeeming features that made her a supermodel. Twiggy became a model back when the criteria was nothing more than "tall and thin." Most clients want tall, white, skinny girls and those are the people who are going to be in demand and thus have the best chance to get picked up by agencies. Runway is even more selective.

I would suggest that even if you think you wouldn't be able to model that you submit Polaroids to agencies. You would be surprised.

When I said "ur fucked" in my dissertation I meant that if a person did not meet the criteria then their chances were below a reasonable chance. This is /fa/ so I like to make it a little dramatic.

I recommend that anyone thinking about modeling should at least submit a set of Polaroids to their preferred agency or agencies. There's always a chance.

Appreciate your effort to make this board better Roxy but it's true what someone said earlier in this thread, this is pretty much even less useful to the people who come here and ask about pea coats and how to cut their hair.

It's blatantly obvious 99% of people here aren't model material, and I don't doubt that there are some pretty attractive people who browse this board, I'm not that naive.

But.. alas there's just too many requirements to be a successful model. Let's just stick to jerking off to each other's pea coats.

Pretty much 14-16 at most. Bigger than a 16 and you will never get in. You also have to have a defined jaw and a flat stomach (no rolls whatsoever).

Basically, you have to not look like a fat girl in order to sell fat girl clothing..

Yeah, it makes me rage too.

I don't know the specifics behind plus size or petite modeling. I know that most petite models are the girls who are 5'8 or 5'7 and just couldn't meet the stringently held height requirement. I don't really want to give out wrong or unsourced information but plus size models are usually size 8 to size 10. Ford and Elita have information on plus size models so you might check there if you're interested.

>>594294

You should always try. You could be what they are looking for or maybe you have something that makes their size requirements irrelevant. Agencies usually follow a standard but they are mysterious and will deviate if they feel it could be marketable and by proxy profitable.

Also I want to add that when models are paid in clothing it's usually a shitty tee shirts with brand logos. So sayeth an insider.

Plus size starts from 10 or 12 to 16. Ford has Ford 12+ and Wilhelmina has 10/20 for plus size models. Your body has to be well-proportioned so muffin tops are a big no.

Google Elena Miro and see the type of models she uses so you'd have an idea what plus size models usually look like.

fun fact: If Marilyn Monroe was still alive today, she'd be considered a plus-size model.

I don't sleep EVER. JK bff, It takes a relatively large chunk of time to model but it's more like a day here and a day there. The time adds up but you make it part of your routine. I mean most schools including mine have about 4 hours a day on average more for me because I have a shitton of labs. Factor in 6 to 7 hours of sleep. You still have 13 hours left in that day to study, get to a shoot, and socialize. Most of that time is inevitably spent fucking around. You don't model every day and most photographers in my experience are busy during the week so you end up doing weekend shoots.

When you get signed to an agency you spend time going to casting calls but if you belong to a smaller agency because you live in a big city that is not New York or LA you can just drive the small distance to get to one or a shoot. If you get signed to a big agency and live there it's much the same. However, a lot of agencies will fly their models in and have a number of casting calls lined up, shoot, and fly back.

1. Do I have to learn how to crack a genuine smile to make it as a model.
2. What if they like me, then they ask me to take my shirt and pants off and theyre like "Ooo..whats wrong with your tit?" Game Over?
3. When taking polaroids, how many, and what angles/shots do I take?

As for your question.

Professional modeling in general is a constant struggle in and out of debt for a number of years depending on how motivated you are to advance yourself. You'll hear the word "good exposure" tossed around like a skank on prom night. Most jobs don't pay anything distantly worthwhile but you keep doing it because eventually it pays off when you start landing campaigns or exclusive shows. These only happen if you have "good exposure."If you're based in a smaller agency the money isn't great but you spend a lot less considering you're already established in that city.

idk, there has been predictions that due to the recession there's going to be a gradual shift to soft and conventional types of beauties. since prada already followed this by having a conventionally pretty model open her show, different from the sasha pivovarovas she used in her shows/campaigns.. other labels might follow. so yeah.. if there's any trend now it's classic soft beauties.

I would assume people would want you to have a genuine smile however it would depend on the picture. It's not something they normally exclude someone for as it is way easier to torture the model with a smiling coach.

If the tit significantly impacts your image then they might. However you are just joshin' me!

For Polaroids most agencies want a face shot, three quarters shot (three quarters of your body), a side profile, and a full body shot. Some may have other specifications like a picture of you smiling but most agencies want those four. You can also send more if you feel so inclined.

OH YOU WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH YOU.

"For male models it's much more open, average male model stats are a 33-40 inch chest, a 29-32 inch waist (any skinnier and you're fucked, sorry /fa/gs), and hip size is usually unimportant.

Ideal shoe size for male models is a 10.5 and as always minimum height is 5'11 with maximum height usually being 6'2. Male modeling is a little more lenient and is much more accommodating than female modeling, however, male models are paid less. Most male models have longer careers in fashion."

Those are the dimensions typically.

I'm sure others here know more than I do about this but generally they want a strong jawline, symmetrical face, and a normal shaped head. Male models generally vary considerably more than female models as the market is more diverse. Strong cheekbones also seem to be a plus. The market also seems to be in favor of Caucasian male models these days although that seems to be a steady constant. Ages 16 up to late 20's are the age requirements typically.

Practice in front of a full length mirror. The web is full of poses and try your best to emulate them. Most of it is about knowing how to move your body and if you condition yourself to do that you'll be fine. Same goes for your walk. Try taping yourself and check to see what you can change. It's all about conditioning.

Your measurements are probably fine as your height is adequate.

Lol reality check indeed. I encourage most of you to submit but the bottom line is that very few people succeed in getting signed to a major agency and that site portrays a fairly accurate line of what you have to live up to in order to be accepted in this line of work.
>> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)05:18 No.594515

when you get signed you'll have a development phase where your agency grooms you, teach you how to walk, pose, etc... before they add you in their main board but here are my favorite walkers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj7FDG9ubQk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcWOHrfsGCI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmrjHLZO9rg

but you have to have variety in your walk cuz while others would want a fierce stomping sexy walk some would ask you to walk like a robot or even dance around in stage.

for poses just go look at fashion magazines to get some ideas.

but work more on your poses rather than your walk cuz it's campaigns that give you money, not runway and even the nastiest walkers get booked in runway shows.

Keep in mind that a lot of the shots you see on that site are with the help of professional high end photographers, extensive photoshop work, and a lot of work with the model. That's the finished project and the person behind the photograph can sometimes shock you. Which is why I rely on Polaroids to judge a model as it's what they look without the glamorous clothing or makeup. However it's still an exclusive business.

Hahahahaha, the term Polaroid is just meant to describe a photo that isn't professionally done and is lacking the shit stylists, makeup artists, wardrobe specialists, and professional editors would do that others will do themselves. They're not interested in how good someone can apply your make up or shoop your photos. They're interested in the absolute "pure" image of that person because that's what actually matters.

And no, a lot of people who frequent /fa/ actually are fashion models. Personally, I do some as well, but not as professional.

If you can find a fitted jacket that's not 'light' and actually useful in -5 degrees, please, inform me.

models are so fucking stupid. when i go to fashion shows, or flip through a magazine, all i see is a mannequin that's holding up clothes. models are just logs that designers get to throw their creations on. why would any one want that profession? you're done by 24, and all your career, you've been looked at as a block of wood with a 24 inch waist. ugh.

>First of all, almost everyone can be a model. All it takes is a douchebag with a camera and suddenly you're a model. However, it takes actual talent to be a "professional model."

This is like saying anyone can be a surgeon, and that all it takes is a maniac with a knife, but it takes talent to be a "professional surgeon."

No because surgery is not a hobby, it's a profession.

modeling, photography, music, cooking, etc. can be a hobby. it does not mean you are a photographer, model, musician, chef, etc.

It's all semantics anyway. DO YOU MAKE MONEY BECAUSE OF IT. is the main pre-req. get smart.

I said everyone can be a model with the help of a random douchebag because it's true.

The term Model is just a word we use to describe someone who partakes in an activity and it does not denote prestige or relevance. I wanted to point it out because a lot of people will consistently claim to be models.

Most people interested in modeling are not interested because they want to be able to brag about their meaningless achievements by taking it onto a word we associate with prestige. However, some people do just that and it's important for anyone even relatively interested in the topic to know the difference between what they think is a model and what that term can apply to.
