Anyone here tried the vinyl edition of Vista? What do you think about it?
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)16:55 No.752407
It has a warmer, richer tone on my hi-fi. The CD version is overcompressed.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)16:56 No.752415
33, 45 or 78?
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)16:57 No.752419
when it crashes, you can really feel it
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)16:58 No.752423
My install was all grainy, I had to return it.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:11 No.752463
I tried to use it but it said that I needed to upgrade my needle.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:14 No.752478
I left my copy under the sun, and now it´s playing all funny
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:16 No.752485
lol vistafags

You're not a true man until you've manually scratched in each and every minuscule groove. Vinyl Gentoo ftw.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:18 No.752490
Does it come in a handful of 500 disks?

Put some heavy books on it for a while, it should straighten it all out.

I'm getting read errors. Has anyone else been able to install this with a ceramic cartridge?

/Once upon a time, software actually was distributed on vinyl, often as flexi's. The data was recorded akin to how it would be on a cassette tape, aka 300bps Kansas standard or whatnot, and you'd just hook up your TT to the tape in I guess. The density of storage was low enough that scratches and pressing flaws weren't important, I suppose.

Supposedly, with modern technology, a conventional 33 could hold several hundred megabytes of data.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:35 No.752542
>>752539
I'd like to upgrade to that. How well does it run in the stock 48k of ram? Is a 128k speccy needed for it to become practical?
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:38 No.752547
>>752542
I'd recommend 128k - paging to tape is an absolute bitch.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:40 No.752552
>>752547
No, I can use my waferdrive as a page. It's pretty damn fucking fast; 80K in about 90 seconds!
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:44 No.752561
>>752552
But I thought you needed Vista for ZX Spectrum to use ReadyBoost technology like that.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:49 No.752572
>>752561
It's not readyboost. I want to use my streaming cartridge drive to hold the page file, instead of storing it on standard cassette tape. With such a a short spool of tape, it should be able to find swap data within 10 seconds.

Manually rewinding and fast forwarding to work with the swap file sounds like too much of a hassle, anyway.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:51 No.752576
>>752572
OMG enjoy your limited read-write cycles! Your cartridge will die in a matter of weeks!
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:56 No.752579
I love you, /g/.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:56 No.752581
I got it in cassettes, so much better...
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:56 No.752582
>>752576
Yes, but what is a man to do. I cannot afford a real disk drive, not even those tiny 3" 100k one's I see hawked in computer shopper. I already bought my waffa, now I'm kinda stuck with it as that's where my saved money went. Yes, poorfag, I know.
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)17:59 No.752585
>>752581
Lucky. I purchased the 8track edition, and it came on 16 cartridges. It takes forever to install because Microsoft didn't plan the file layout. Fucking A! It reads for a while, decides it needs a file back in track 2, goes kerchunk, fast forwards for a while, repeat process, throughout all 16 tapes. Oh, and tape 13 kept getting read errors till I stuck a matchbook under the tape.

/There actually WAS a computer that saved data to 8track tape :D
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)18:02 No.752590
archive this, please

not in analog tapes - in 4chanarchive
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)18:05 No.752595
I got leopard - I paid less for the vinyl and it looks so much crisper, though I still don't know why I had to get their brand of pickup, which is the same thing for more money...

I still have a copy of Windows 3.1 on 19 78 rpm discs somewhere in my den. Even then, I had to do a mail in exchange from the 6 LP set sold in stores. Since this must be quite rare, is it worth anything?
>> Anonymous 11/08/07(Thu)18:19 No.752621

25min on each side is about half a cds worth of sound so a similar ammount of data could be stored?

for 33s only.

History of speccies and software distributed on vinyl record. I must admit, it sounds cool.

Something you can do on today's machines is play around with Ham Radio programs (HamScope, et.al.) that play and decode RTTY, FSK, MORSE..
