confession time. rick astley's masterpiece "whenever you need somebody" was my first record. on vinyl baby (yeah i'm that old). and even though you'd hardly catch me singing those songs anymore, i do feel obliged to support the initiative to vote for rick astley as best act ever. it follows this link or else it gets the hose.
you can, should and will vote for change later. but today you have to vote for a legend.

meet me at the gates by capsized - 09/19/08 @ 03:36PM PST
yahoogate, huh? well, sorry to spoil the fun, but while our hosting capacity is enough to stand the public interest in something like project chanology, it is not really strong enough to cope with either a) 4chan downtimes or b) anon messing with potential vice presidents. therefore, we refrain from publishing any yahoogate related topics for now, in order to keep this site accessible.

the internet runs on rainbows by capsized - 07/19/08 @ 17:32PM PST
attention, the following is a 4chanarchive trivia news post. tl;dr: a bunch of numbers and facts about 4chanarchive and selling ads.
4chanarchive is currently visited by 4,000 to 6,000 unique users per day, viewing about 7 pages per visit and spend averagely 8 minutes of their live here daily.
so when you read this, you might be the 600,000th unique visitor this year. alexa lists us as one of the top 20,000 sites of the net (best ranking was something around 13,000, but that was on the heydays of 4chan (if you didn't know, 4chan's popularity is going down lately, which might be a pleasant suprise for many.))
our visitors come to 65% from nothern america and 25% from europe. if you look at the top visitors by cities the top six is london, sydney, melbourne, brisbane, helsinki and chicago. this sounds suprising to see the first american city at nr 6,
but it supports an interesting theory i was told last year, that the whole "lulz" subculture (to which i count the chans, encyclopedia dramatica, ytmnd etc.) is in fact bigger in rural areas than in metropolitan areas. on the bottom end of that list, there is a bunch of caribic islands, but also one visit from the vatican. only one? go figure. must be our deliberate lack of shota!
the most viewed thread so far this year is probably this, thanks to someone who posted it on reddit, where it stayed top of the nsfw list for about a week.
(protip: you can see an unsorted list of the most viewed threads in the threadcloud).
now the following might be interesting for the regular visitor, but is rather a pitch to those who run their own websites, blogs, chans or whatnot, because the following additional information is for you guys.
advertising on 4chanarchive is cheap... dirty cheap actually.
1st example: the leaderboard banner on top of almost every page costs $0.50 per day, gets 12,000 impressions and about 60 clicks per day. that is a cpc (cost per click) of $0.007. yes, that's less than a cent. it gets even cheaper if you take a week or a month.
2nd example: the interstitial ad that appears on the first thread visited (and every 10th thereafter), costs $2 per day and every time it pops-up it counts as a click. that's about 800 clicks per day = cpc of $0.0025 or 24,000 clicks during a month for $40 (cpc $0.0017).
real life fact: we are usually only earning a fraction of that, because during the time that no one has booked an ad, we run the network's cheapo bulk ads.
the above mentioned ads can be purchased from etology (btw, that's the same network that 4chan is using). the ads between the archived posts can be purchased from adengage.com ($1 per week, cpc usually less than $0.01)
if you don't want to join those network, but still want to advertise on 4chanarchive, just drop me an email.
i'll close this news post with another interesting fact, did you know how much an ad on 4chan costs?
$8 for a text ad and up to $200 for a banner a day (cpc $0.03 - $0.12). so at least buy some ads to support 4chan. you don't even need have your own site to do that.

kudos by capsized - 07/07/08 @ 08:28PM PST
what? two months since my last newspost? excuse my ignorance!
you've already noticed from the last newsposts, there is new folks at the archive, and i say "hell yeah, you bet there is!!!". it is time for some kudos.
a few months have gone by since i've been looking for helping hands to help with the archive... and what hands i've found! before i get silly and homoerotic, i'll just move on, shall i?
first meet awesoem. once you get to know him, you'll realise how humble he was with the name he chose. although i've never met him in person, i'm sure his appearance is that of a god from greek mythology.
please also meet hatseflats. through his veins pulsates pure magic and he has the brain of ten einsteins that each have the brain of ten einsteins. and that is quite a lot of einsteins, if you ask me.
both are the programming geniuses behind the archive now, my dirty fingers won't spoil the beautiful code they are weaving. looks like i will concentrate on running this site, write more news updates and do stuff that no one notices (who calls moot a lazy bitch just because he doesn't post news updates every 5 minutes?).
together, we have plans that i won't reveal yet, but it will include a complete relaunch. therefore there won't be much more updates for the archive as you know it.
last but not least, let's not forget the probably hardest working man with the archive at the moment, behold fetts, our windex sweating janitor that is currently dishing up all the lulz on this site, day after day after day after day, just-for-you! so you better show him some love!

Screenshot Gallery by AWESOEM - 06/02/08 @ 04:44PM PST
The old kusaba /scr/ board has been replaced with the new Screenshot Gallery. You can find it on the sidebar under "message boards". Everyone please to be uploading all your screenshots, helping tag the current ones, and reporting non-screenshots.

/p/ Archival by AWESOEM - 05/14/08 @ 6:19PM PST
You can now archive threads from /p/. Also, /b/ threads now need 8 requests for automatic archival.

pockets full of 4chanarchive by capsized - 05/04/08 @ 04:27PM PST
quick news entry to tell y'all: 4chanarchive is now also available in a mobile browser optimized version.
direct your phones to m.4chanarchive.org and enjoy. thanks go to awesoem, one of our new developers.

Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late! by capsized - 04/30/08 @ 05:16PM PST
you might notice that lately the archive doesn't update much. that's because all reviewers (including me) are busy with other stuff, which isn't
anything unusual, but now it is since we all had to take a time-out at the same time.
therefore, we are now looking for one or two thread reviewers.
you will be reviewing and publishing unreviewed archived threads, deleting failure submissions like yami threads or "if this post ends in" threads.
please apply if you can spend 30 minutes a day reviewing threads and have genuine interest in this.
include to the mail your a/s/l, your gold account username (you should already have one for at least a month in order to qualify), your favourite boards and a good reason why you should be considered.

slave to the robots by capsized - 04/18/08 @ 04:48PM PST
as people have pointed out, archiving for some of the lately added boards didn't work, namely /cgl/, /fa/ & /fit/.
that has been fixed now. sorry for the inconvenience.
and here a message in our own interest. if you want to help us with reviewing new threads, then please rate and comment
unpublished threeads (you can find them by navigating to "request interface" -> "unpublished threads" if you didn't know).
there are time periods when the mods don't have much time for reviewing, so looking at the ratings and picking the best ones
does help us a lot.

update: 4chan frontpage is back up, i'll keep that url list in the news because i know it will come handy the next time.
and there were problems at the archive as well... threads haven't been archived for about the last 24 hours, but that was completely my fault. my apologies.

oh, hai by capsized - 04/01/08 @ 03:30PM PST
developer application period is over, thanks to everyone who offered their help.
this doesn't mean that we won't need people helping in the future, it is always worth dropping me an email
if you are interested in helping. maybe you have a great idea for the archive or feature that you would want to develop,
don't hesitate to contact me.
and even though there haven't been news the last three weeks, actually quite some things have happend behind the scenes.
main topic of course, our team is getting bigger. i present to you the new developer team (in order of appearance):
- awesoem
- steveuk
- marcel
- hatseflats
with special appearance of impclaw who helped me conceiving a conceptual design for the upcoming frontpage.
i won't rule out that the team will still grow, but let's get this thing rolling first.
i'm also happy to announce the first new feature that has been implemented under the reign of this new team. gold members (remember? a gold account is free forever!)
can exclusively now download all images of a thread conveniently in a zip file. if you don't yet have a gold account,
then register nao (it is still free forever!!!1). i just noticed that the link to the registration is nastily hidden
like the nasty ads that keep financing this archive. but it seems that 1770 people (zomg, i should have asked 10 bucks!!!
...just kidding) were still able to find it so it probably
wasn't that hidden after all.

de-lousing in the comatorium by capsized - 03/12/08 @ 02:51PM PST
yes, yes, i've been sort of away again. mentally. i was an audiosurf addict. it was bad to a stage where i saw the game when i closed my eyes. that was not pretty. but hey i'm back, your favourite junkie, looking for his next addiction.
during my audiosurf rehab there was a lot of heavy thinking to do in order to come up with an idea regarding how to proceed with the archive.
i had basically two options (the third option, "let everything go on the way it is now", was out of question).
option one, give the archive away, look for a new project.
option two, increase the team and take the archive to the next level.
screw option one, next level it is! therefore:
wanteddevelopers for 4chanarchive
that's right folks, your favourite archive is looking for developers to help me maintain/upgrade/delouse the archive.
i'm looking for a currently undefined amount of people that are somehow skilled in any of these areas:
- - php & mysql
- - html & css and webdesign skills
- - javascript, ajax, etc
i value commitment and determination above skills and experience.
you don't have to be the uber-programmer, but you need to have fun doing it and interest in getting involved with the archive.
tasks that are available (only a selection):
- - implementing new features and categories (suggestions welcome)
- - redesigning pages
- - improving moderator interfaces
- - adding services for gold account members
- - adding support for non-standard boards, e.g. oekaki, flash, etc ...
- - implementing an upload & rating system for screenshots
- - implementing a better search function
- and of course bugfixing, polishing, rewriting the existing code
so if anything of the above interests you or if you have an idea for some feature that the archive needs (and you can code it), then please contact me per email.
your first email should contain following information:
- - a/s/l
- - what are your skills?
- - why would you like to participate?
- - what would you like to do?
application period is until end of march.
until then i work on making most of the current code accessible through some svn.
(after another round of audiosurf)

back from outerspace by capsized - 02/25/08 @ 02:42PM PST
i was away for a week, somewhere where i had no access to teh tubes for a week... at least that was what i was made to believe. imagine my face when the first thing i saw in my holiday was a fat cable modem, teasing me with its blinking lights, knowing i had no laptop with me.
and then i come back to see this. new boards have spawned from moot's fruitful groin and one of them is /r9k/, a board based on rules defined by my favourite webcomic artist. now i missed /r9k/'s first spasms and feel like i didn't arrive to the hospital in time to experience my child's birth.
one way for me to compensate this was to go ahead and to finally add all 4chan boards (incl. trial boards) to the archive. that is all let's say "standard" imageboards. exceptions are /f/, /i/, /p/, /rs/, /r/ and all textboards.
yeah, i know, the list of boards is too long for the sidebar... i'll think of something soon.

experiment by capsized - 02/09/08 @ 02:45PM PST
there is a slideshow feature available now. check it out while it is available. gonna monitor what bandwidth impact i will have. just click the "start slide show" link available on top of every thread.
also you might want to get this add-on for your browser to get an immersive 3d experience (see screenshots here and here)
ps: currently, to get the 3d gallery with the installed add-on, you have to open a thread in its own tab or window and click the blue icon top right in your browser (not "start slide show").
pps: at the moment only windows and mac-fags can use the add-on. but appearantly piclens is working on making it cross platform.

no john, you are the janitor. and then john was a mod. by capsized - 02/08/08 @ 05:03PM PST
it is happening. all janitors received their power-ups and are now mods. which means they can publish/remove threads and delete posts.
they are not almighty, every registered user can influence if the mods can publish or remove a thread by rating a thread. so, use the rating system. use it well.
this is actually a huge step for me. i've reviewed threads for almost a year now. never wanted to be the one who decides between epic and fail, but still... giving away power feels strange.

slowness by capsized - 02/04/08 @ 2:09PM PST
just a short message to say aloud what seems to be obvious.
i'm taking a small break from the archive, which means that no great new things will be implemented the next few weeks. well, small break still means that i'm looking around the place, review and occasionally comment in the boards. and soon all janitors will get their upgrade to what you could call mod status, so i'll have less work reviewing (just reviewing the reviewers).
talking about janitors, please welcome chromium, our latest addition to our team.

lol h4x by capsized - 01/03/08 @ 5:34PM PST
heh, it took almost a year, but now i've finally been honored with some hackers deeming my little site worth the
effort to hack the message boards.
thank you. my e-peen just grew many, many inches.
well, ok, i was provoking it, by not updating the message board software for a while, but still,
thank you for taking your time "aryan..." erm somethings... forgot the group name already... just remember they were saying greetings from hal turner.
oh, and next time, don't use the goatse image again, pretty please? it makes me hungry for donots, and where do you think am i supposed to get donots in europe at this time of the day???
boards are back by capsized - 01/05/08 @ 4:01PM PST
the boards are back and updated to the latest version and all.
also in other news, give a warm welcome to impclaw, who is joining the janitor team.
we are together working on a new frontpage, so if you have any suggestions, go to our fresh /com/ board and let us know.

if this post ends in penis... by capsized - 12/30/07 @ 5:03PM PST
beta testing has taken longer than i thought and that had two reasons: first, i didn't have the time that i thought i would have would over the holidays. and second, i had some awesome beta testers that helped me testing out a few things, convinced me that my first ideas didn't work how i imagined and pointed me in the right direction. and after some redesigning, i finally have something ready to offer the masses. remember though, i'm not the guy that polishes something until it is ready (otherwise the archive would not exist). there is still a lot a stuff undone and features to come. the whole archive is a constant work-in-progress.
but now here it comes, brace yourself and get yourself a totally free 4chanarchive gold account
how do i registered? click here or use the link under the login box in the sidebar.
with your 4chanarchive gold account you can....
- - read unreviewed threads
- - rate reviewed and unreviewed threads to get so called 'cones'
- - use cones to archive directly (no request queue, zomg!!)
- - add threads to your favourites list
- - toggle ads off (everywhere excluding the archives message boards)
- - toggle the 'inline imaeg' feature on/off by default
- - post comments as namefag or stay anonymous
- more features to come...
did i already mention it is free?
if you have questions, flames, hugs or anything you have to say to me, use the comments board or mail me.
xmas by capsized - 12/25/07 @ 5:08PM PST
this year the archive will incorporate the xmas gimmicks like the xmas hat, the snowflakes, the gay music & the eyecancer colours. if someone can tell me in the comments board about when this started on /b/ (i've just guesstimated 24 Dec around 17:00 for now) and also some time when it has ended (will have ended, lol i dunno english). thank you.update: just remembered that i can do it myself. ps: xmas threads will be reviewed in a few days, holiday backlog, laziness, etc...
merry whatever by capsized - 12/24/07 @ 2:17AM PST
have some nice holidays, so will i. therefore updates might be even slower than usual. i wish you a merry "whatever-you-celebrate(-or-not)"!
lol hax by capsized - 12/14/07 @ 5:29PM PST
4chan down? again? i'm drunk...don't care. cheers...
beta testing commences by capsized - 12/8/07 @ 5:52PM PST
first batch of emails with beta testing instructions went out to everyone who emailed me. you can still contact me if you wanna join, but i won't guarantee that there will be any need for more people. we'll see. i wanna have the whole thing public this year still, so testing period will hopefully be short.
go for gold by capsized - 12/7/07 @ 4:57PM PST
ha ha, i love how
hysterical 4chan can get sometimes.
it actually inspired me to this frivolous "4chanarchive gold account" image that took mindboggling long to do pixel by pixel in ms paint.
but now this is serious news post.
that image is not far from truth. in the near future there'll be a few extras in the archive and they will require you to register, but it will be completely free. since my janitors have failed me, i'm looking for beta testers. if you are interested to be a beta tester, send an email with the subject "i wish to be the little girl" to the usual address and you might get considered and receive further instructions.
